The history of gourmet coffee in Annapolis, Maryland goes back to at least the early 1800s. One of the first coffee houses in Annapolis was The Gresham House, which operated from 1796-1811. In 1819, Captain John Gresham built The Gresham Coffee House on Market Street near Park Row. This establishment became one of the earliest and most popular gourmet coffeehouses in town. In 1857, Reverend Nathaniel Morse opened his own coffee house on North Middleton Street. This business served as a meeting place for the Annapolis community and was used by both men and women for their morning caffeine fix. In 1871, Reverend Morse's son-in-law, Dr. James Watt developed Watt's Coffee House on High Street near Union Station. This establishment became one of the most popular gourmet coffeehouses in town and was known for its unique roastings of specialty coffees. In 1912, Mr. Frank Jepson organized and ran The Jepson Coffee Company from his home on Simons Lane until his death in 1940. At this time, Annapolis had its first grocery store with a café attached - The Holland Grocery Store & Cafe - which served as one of the city's main source of caffeine during lunchtime hours (and later at night). The Jepson Coffee Company continued to operate from this location until 1969 when it merged with another local business, The Dutch Bros., to form Dutch Bros./Jepson Corporation (later known as Dutch Bros./Robertson Foods). During the 1970s and 1980s, Dutch Bros./Robertson Foods grew into one of Maryland's leading food retailers with over 100 stores across the state including outlets withinAnnapolis itself! In 1984Dutch Bros./Robertson Foods merged with socially responsible conglomerate Wise Living Enterprises Incorporated (Wise Living) to become Wise Life/Dutch Bros.-Robertson Foods Incorporated (Wise Life/ Robertsons Food Stores). During this time period we also saw our first foray intothe global food market when we bought out British company Malthouse Tea Merchants Ltd., making us an official tea merchants wholesaler under that name.. We continue to grow over these years by entering new markets such as Argentina where we acquired our first retail outlet; South Africa where we opened our second store; Australia where we opened two stores...and now here in Maryland!
