Bowie, Maryland is a city in and the county seat of Bowie County, Maryland, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–D.C. metropolitan area and the Baltimore–Washington Combined Statistical Area. The name "Bowie" derives from "Butler's Bowie," an Iuka Indian village located on what is today's Bowie Heights neighborhood of Northwest Baltimore. settlers in this area began calling themselves "Bowies" or "Bowserys" because they hunted bowheads on nearby Monkstown Hill. In 1851, John Witherspoon, who had been land commissioner for Carroll County since 1827, named a stream in easternmost Bowie Township after his friend and fellow Commissioner Benjamin Butler (1775-1855). In 1892, Edward Hicks built a home called Eagle Rock on land that now forms the eastern edge of downtown Bowie. This marked the beginning of what would become one of Baltimore's most vibrant neighborhoods – still known today as "Eagle Rock." In 1945, then-Governor William Donald Schaefer signed legislation creating western Bowie Township from portions of Eastern and Central Bowie Townships east of US Highway 1/US Highway 301 to form new township boundaries; as a result, much current urban growth takes place within present day Bowie Townships rather than within its original borders. With help from state legislators during their 1967 session as part of Agenda 21 – which aimed to promote sustainable community development through public education and government regulation – modern day infrastructure such as retail services along US Highways 1A & 301A were developed in Downtown Bowie bordering both Inner Harbor East and Parkville while much suburban growth took place towards Elkridge Stadium within present day Laurelwood subdivision outside Johns Hopkins Hospital limits while much current urban growth takes place within present day Bowman Townships rather than within its original borders just across Harford Road from Aberdeen Proving Ground where Army Research Laboratory is located today

The city's first courthouse and jail were built in 1854; both are still in use today. The first post office opened in 1861. In 1865, Bowie became the capital of West Virginia when that state seceded from Maryland; it remained so until 1971 when Community College District No. 1 moved to Charleston County. From 1951 to 1957, astronaut Neil Armstrong visited Bowie while he was training for his space mission; during this time he used Bethesda Medical Center as his base camp.
