Bowie, Maryland is home to a rich coffee history dating back to the early 1800s. The town's first coffee house was opened in 1815 and it was known as The Coffee House of the Mount Carmelites. It was later renamed The Coffee House of Bowie because it was located in Bowie Landing on the Potomac River. In 1839, The Coffee House of Bowie moved to its current location and continued serving coffee until 1971. The first roasting company in Bowie was called Western Roasters and it operated from 1886-1892. It roasted beans for three different businesses including the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, John Farquhar's grocery store, and Wm. B. Yeoman's brewery. During this time, Bowman also became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful architecture, interesting historical events, and great coffee scene. In 1870, German immigrant Emil Kapp founded the Kapp brothers Brewing Company in Bowie which served as one of the first breweries outside of Germany ever open for business. After years of success with their beers such as Admiral Porter and Hefeweizen, Kapp decided to open his own roastery in 1889 which he named after himself - Emil Kapp Roastery Incorporated (EKR). This company soon became one of the leading roasting companies in America thanks to their high quality products and successful marketing efforts. World War II led to a decline in business for EKR however; they were forced to sell their assets to Lyons Coffee Co., Ltd., a British-owned company that purchased them for $1 million in 1945. Lyons closed down EKR's production facilities by 1950 but continued distributing EKR's products under their own name until 1974 when they merged with United States Paper Corporation (USPC) into what is now known as Brown & Williamson Holdings Incorporated (BWH). At this point, all EKR products were rebranded as Brown & Williamson products throughout most of North America including Canada where they continue operations today under various brands such as McIlroy Canadian Coffee Company Limited (MCCL). During World War II, Bowman also became known for its delicious wartime chocolate milk called "Bowman Milk". This product was created by local entrepreneur Harry Dixon who combined ground up cocoa beans with cold cream SHAKE made at home using an old ice cream churn he had acquired from an Army officer stationed nearby during World War I. After selling his share in MCCL back to Brown & Williamson Holdings Incorporated following the war, Harry Dixon continued producing "Bowman Milk" until his death in 1980s at age 95 years old!
