As the city of Bowie, Maryland grows in population and economy, so too does its gun culture. In fact, the gun industry has become such a significant part of the local economy that some residents refer to it as "the City of Gunsmoke." The history of this firearm culture begins with rifle Shooting at Parties on Mount Vernon Place in 1871. Rifle shooting was an event popular among wealthy Baltimoreans during the early days of the city's growth. At that time, there were no public shootings or muzzleloader hunting tournaments in Bowie County. Instead, people would go to Mount Vernon Place to shoot rifles at parties. This event is often considered to be the beginning of pistol shooting in Bowie County. Pistol shooting began appearing regularly at Henrico Park in Bowie from about 1875 until about 1903 when handguns became more common and Pistol Shooting moved out of Henrico Park into other areas including Druid Hill Park and Towson University golf courses. However, pistol shooting continued to occur at various locations throughout Bowie until around 1914 when it all but disappeared from our community due to World War I restrictions on firearms ownership by military personnel. After World War I ended, handgun ownership returned to normal proportions in our community and pistol shooting resumed at various locations throughout Bowie until about 1930 when it all but vanished again because of new gun control laws passed after the Depression Era. In 1933, knife-throwing contests started being held near Mount Vernon Place and soon gunslingers began using these events as opportunity to practice their marksmanship skills while competing against each other for bragging rights. Eventually these contests evolved into what we know today as NRA sanctioned Knife-Throwing Championships which are still taking place today on Saturday mornings across Maryland! Today, pistol shooting is once again very popular among residents of Bowie due principally to its historical ties thereto and its ability to provide a memorable experience for those who attend these championships!

Bowie, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. Bowie is one of the most historically significant towns in the United States and has been part of the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area since 2013. The town was founded by John Bowie in 1792 as a small farming village on the west bank of what is now known as Loch Raven Lake. In 1814, Bowie became one of five outposts on Mount Vernon Island during the first U.S.–Mexico War; he served as its captain and later resigned to become its governor. He donated land to form Bowie Heights Cemetery in 1836 and helped found Bethesda Presbyterian Church in 1841. As an agricultural center, Bowie experienced several boom years during the late 1800s and early 1900s including periods of famine (1890-1910) and prosperity (1915-1920). However, following World War II there were declines in population and industry until 1990 when new businesses began to open up around Loch Raven Lake resumed fishing for bass and other waterfowl. In 2003, then-Mayor Allan Kittleman announced that Bowie would be joining Prince George's County for economic development purposes; subsequently, development took off with businesses such as ABC Company opening a law office complex on Main Street in 2006 and Lululemon Athletica LLC moving into their current headquarters building adjacent to Loch Raven Park just after 9/11/. The demographics of Bowie have changed dramatically over time with more people born outside of America becoming residents while others have moved away or retired within the past few decades - making it an increasingly diverse community where everyone has some connection to what makes this place unique: Its history. Today's residents are descendants of John Fetterman who immigrated from Ulster Province Ireland in 1768; his father had settled near modern day Fredericktown before moving east along I-95 towards today's MD state line around 1800;Fetterman established himself hereabouts including founding what is now known as "Johnstown" which may be earliest recorded European settlement east of Washington D C
