Cumberland, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,731 at the 2010 census. Cumberland is home to the CumberlandMilitary Base and to two research universities - Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University. It is also unincorporated territory of Prince George's County. The first settlers in what became Cumberland were farmers who arrived in 1776 from Virginia. They began planting corn and wheat on their farms and trading goods with other areas of Maryland and Pennsylvania. By 1813, they had laid out a town including a courthouse, square block streets, schools, taverns and churches. In 1814-1815 construction began on the Military Barracks which served as the county seat until 1925 when it was moved to Hyattsville. In 1795 Drury built his house on present day Chestnut Street near where he later married Martha Custis Washington (1761-1837). This house still stands today as part of the Historic District of Chestnut Street in Cumberland. The Washington family resided there for over eighty years before moving to Bel Air in 1958 following President John FKennedy's death that year. In 1824 Messrs Crampton & Son founded a gristmill on Water Mill Run just east of downtown Cumberland while another mill called Hickory Grist was built west of downtown by Elijah Hicks about 1830 (). Both mills were operated until 1907 when they were combined into one plant under the name Hickory Mills Incorporated (). After 1907 many small businesses closed because transportation improved so rapidly that larger mills could easily take advantage of this new technology., However Hickory Mills continued production until its closure in 1984 due to economic problems caused by competition from large foreign manufacturers.). Cumberland, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is the second-largest community in the county after Upper Marlboro and lies on the right bank of the Potomac River. Cumberland was founded by Ulster Scots settlers in 1778. The first post office opened in 1812. The name Cumberland came from two places: Cumnor House on the left bank of the river and Cumnor Ferry across it; and because of these associations, it has been commonly called "The Cotton Capital of America." In 1785, a party of developers led by Colonel John Smith started to develop land east of present day Cumberland on what is now known as Fairfax Avenue. In1796, construction began on a gristmill that would become one of the largest mills in North America. By 1800, Cumberland had built three churches and some sawmills along with several stores and taverns. In 1801, President James Krieger signed an act ordering all federal lands within three miles (5 km) of Washington D.C., including Cumberland Township to be surveyed into homestead lots for European settler families who had purchased them during President Thomas Jefferson's American Revolution. This event became known as The Act Of Unification which created much havoc among local farmers who were anxious to start their own farms but were forbidden from doing so while they awaited government approval to do so. A census taken in 1830 found that there were 2,500 people living in Cumberland Township with 1% African American ancestry according to Federal records; this number increased over time as more freedmen arrived in America and sought refuge here from slavery abroad. By 1840 when data was gathered for the first time since1800 there were 5,000 residents living within its borders with about 20% black Americans according to Federal records.. As opportunities improved for white men working outside agriculture during Reconstruction period following Civil War General Ulysses S Grant's military occupation (1865 - 1871), many blacks migrated westward into Pennsylvania or northward into Ohio Valley settlements such as Pittsburgh or Cleveland where better economic opportunities awaited them than did Pennsylvania’s backcountry areas near Lancaster or Harrisburg where white men still held power politically and economically
