The Elkton Coast Guard Station was established on October 1, 1892 as a result of the merger of the two previous coast guard stations in Elkton and Westville. The station handled law enforcement and traffic control activities along the Washington-Baltimore corridor. It was renamed Elkton Coast Guard Station on October 1, 1954 after it merged with the nearby Westville Coast Guard Station. In 1967, the station became part of Naval Air Station Patuxent River. In 1992, the unit was redesignated as the Coastal Security Command. On September 11th, 2001, this command responded to reports of terrorist activity in Baltimore County. The command later conducted search and rescue operations during Hurricane Irene in 2013 and 2014.

The Elkton Coast Guard Station was founded on December 8, 1916 by Lieutenant Colonel John H. Papp and his men from the 4th Naval District. The station served as a naval patrol and warning center for the town of Elkton and its environs until it was closed on July 1, 1951. On October 18, 1976, the station reopened as part of a reorganization of the Maryland Coast Guard which included the dissolution of the 4th Naval District. The station continued to serve as a security detachment for local businesses until it was closed effective September 30, 1992.
Elkton is a small town in western Maryland, United States. Elkton was established in 1851 and has since been the seat of government for the surrounding communities of Bowie Township and Elkton Heights. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The town's history begins with three men who set out from Elkton on horseback to prospect for uranium near what is now Annapolis, Maryland in 1851. They were successful in finding ore but were forced to abandon their venture because of Native American hostilities. In 1865, while General Robert E. Lee was retreating from Appomattox Court House after his final surrender, he and his forces stopped at Elkton on their way back to Baltimore. A detachment of Confederate soldiers restocked there before continuing on their journey northward. The first school in Elkton opened its doors on October 6, 1861; it was located on present-day Market Street. The first post office opened in 1862; it was located on present-day Elm Street. In 1875, the name of the town be changed to Bowie Township after Congressman John Bowie (who had earlier represented Montgomery County). In 1907, the name again changed when Elkhart Township was created adjacent to Bowie Township due to growing residential development within that area. %township map_jpg
The Coast Guard was created on December 15, 1915. The Coast Guard is the nation's first and only service that has a dedicated coast guard mission to protect the coastal communities and maritime interests of the United States. The Coast Guard's missions include enforcing maritime law, preventing unauthorized entry into U.S. waters, providing support to local law enforcement, rescuing victims of emergencies and disasters, and conducting search and rescue operations. The Coast Guard gift history begins with the creation of the Revenue Cutter Service in 1887. In 1914, Congress passed an act establishing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This act provided for NOAA to purchase land at Alaskan ports so that commercial vessels could be screened for contraband cigarettes before they were allowed access to American shores. In 1941, Congress passed the Maritime Security Act which mandated that all merchant ships carry military equipment on board in order to provide security for naval vessels operating off America's coasts. Since then, many gifts have been given by individuals or organizations in memory of members or veterans who have lost their lives as a result of maritime accidents or piracy. Some examples include: An early gift from a individual was a life preserver designed specifically for use by seamen during storms at sea- this gift is often referred to as "the shipping Bible." In 1922, Rear Admiral John Slessor presented USS Constitution Commander General George Washington Payne with a lifeguard lifeboat built at his request while she was docked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Virginia Beach USA- this boat remains one of America's most popular gifts from Coast Guardsmen today! It is also interesting to note that Rear Admiral Slessor served as Commanding Officer aboard Constitution until its decommissioning in 1973! In 1945 President Franklin D Roosevelt appointed Admiral Arthur Radford Cushing as Director of Naval Intelligence which led to his development of Trident missile programs (1948-1953) within NSA based at Columbia Navy Yard - one such program resulted in USS Constellation being donated by Mrs Radford Cushing (daughter of Admiral Cushing) along with her husband LtCdr Jack Welch (!)) While not directly related to Gift History however it should be noted that Commodore David Wohlgemuth donated two submarines – USS Nautilus (SSN 521) and USS Sturgeon (SSN 633), both meant for use exclusively within NATO coastal defense fleets - these submarines remain among America’s favorite gifts from COG sailors today!

Elkton was first called Elkton in 1781, when a band of hunting Indians led by Chief Joseph forced the settlers to leave their homes and move to this area. The name is derived from the word elk, which means deer or animal, and tonkin, meaning place. The town was originally located on the east side of Elk River, but it moved to its present location on the west side in 1853. The first store in town was built in 1834. In 1865, Elkton became one of the original towns in Maryland. It had a population of about 100 people. In 1936, Elkton became a city with a population of about 3000 people. The city has since grown larger and more diversified than ever before and now includes several hundred businesses.
Elkton was a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States until it was incorporated as a city on October 1, 1892. The population of Elkton was 2,000 at the time of incorporation. The first settler in what is now Elkton was Jeremiah Wrenn who arrived in 1776 and built the first home there. The town name may be from a local deer that had been living around the area for years. By 1800, there were six houses in the community and two churches. In 1892, Elkton became one of fourteen towns annexed into Baltimore City. With its new status as a city, Elkton experienced some growth including an expansion of its educational facilities which included three high schools and one vocational school by 1912. In 1916, Elkton also saw its first mayoral election with John Haggerty taking office after being appointed Mayor by then-Governor James Pendergast.
