Elkton is a small town in southern Maryland, about 15 miles east of Washington D.C. Elkton was founded in 1807 by John Hargrave and his wife Sarah. The first settler in the area, Capt. Ebenezer Graves, arrived in 1797 and built the first house on the present site of Elkton The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s as settlers came to work on President George Washington's Mount Vernon estate or to farm around Elkton Point. The population of Elkton peaked at 2,500 in 1825 but declined gradually throughout the 1830s and 1840s as land became more scarce and farming techniques improved. A phosphate mine opened near Elkton in 1849 and contributed greatly to the town's growth thereafter; by 1860, there were over 1,000 residents living in Elmira Township alone. However, because of high competition from other industries (including coalmining), Elkhton saw its heyday only between 1870 and 1880; after that point its fortunes began to decline steadily until it reached a low point of just 100 residents by 1920. since then things have been slowly improving with new housing developments being built including an apartment complex called The Oaks which opened in 2003
Elkton was founded in 1795 by Ebenezer Elkinton and his wife, Susannah. The town prospered for many years but then began to decline in the early 1800s. In 1814, Elkton became a county seat and experienced a period of growth. However, this growth halted after the U.S. Civil War and during the Reconstruction era (1865-1877). Despite these challenges, Elkton continued to grow through the 20th century and was renamed Elkton in 1959.
