Elkton, Maryland is a town located in Cecil County, Maryland. It is the seat of Elkton Township. The population was 2,539 at the 2010 census. The first Marines were deployed to Elkton on December 11, 1941. They served with distinction during World War II and are considered heroes by many residents and businesses in the town. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is located in Elkton and it houses the Marine mammal center which has been providing a safe haven for chimpanzees since 1978. Since then, numerous other Marines have deployments to Elkton either as members of Marine Reserves or as part of active duty troops stationed here. Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hyattsville–Maryland–Washington Metropolitan Area. Elkton was first settled in 1777 by John and Susannah Hockaday. The community name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where elks are Free." In 1812, General Nathaniel Woodbine erected a military fort here to protect settlers on the eastern edge of Prince George's County from Native Americans who were raiding them. The first school in Elkton was built in 1838. In 1849, Earl White opened the first store in what is now Elmwood Cemetery. (The store would later become known as White's grocery.) At that time, only black residents were allowed to open stores in Prince George's County; white residents had to use dark-colored glass windows because light caused Indians to think they were treasure chests being looted. In 1870, Isaac Biddle organized the Agricultural Society of America and donated land for a farmstead northwest of present-day Elkton Creek. This became known as Biddle Field after him and his family operated it until 1957 when it was sold to The Nature Conservancy for conservation purposes. In 1907, Wm Hargrave donated land east of present-day Elmwood Cemetery for an elementary school which became known as Hargrave Elementary School (later Elkton High School). In 1954, Henry Dickson donated land west of Elmwood Cemetery for a high school which became known as Dickson High School (later American University). Today, Elkton is home to more than 12,000 residents and is one of the most important cities in western Maryland.
