Elkton, Maryland has a long and proud military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The town was named for General George Washington, who fought in the war and later served as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. In 1776, Elkton was one of the first places in America to establish a military garrison when British forces landed on the shores of what is now Elkton Heights. Over time, Elkton's military presence has grown considerably with both Regular and militia units stationed here. Today, Elkton's active duty Military Residence provides housing for over 400 service members from all branches of the Armed Forces including Air Force Reserve Commanders and Marines. Additionally, there are numerous civilian contractors employed by our military who also live and work in town. The Military Residence features an impressive array of amenities such as an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, rifle range/range facilities, outdoor basketball courts and more. Elkton, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 5,536 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles north of Washington D.C. on U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 95 and about 15 miles east of Baltimore on State Road 774. Elkton is within the College Park-based Takoma Park Metropolitan Statistical Area and its surrounding suburbs. The Town of Elkton was established in 1825 as a planned community by developers John Matteson and others who were looking to create a new community in Prince George's County that would be attractive to farmers and other businesses with land available for development. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s thanks to the rise of coal mining in nearby Harford County; Elmira Coal Mine opened in 1824, making Elkton one of the first towns in America to become dependent on such an industry. In 1827, Elkton became part of Prince Georges County when it was created from parts of Harford and Frederick Counties; after some debate, the county seat was moved from Ellicott City to Elkton in 1830 because there were no other larger settlements within reach of Catonsville (the county seat at that time). During World War II, local leaders helped build up their town into what is now known as "the Little America" due to its role as both an important manufacturing center for munitions production during World War II and as a popular tourist destination for those living near military installations around the country (elktonshire@aol dot com). Elkton, Maryland is a town in northern Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. Elkton is situated on the southern edge of Northern Virginia and is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Washington D.C.. The land that now forms Elkton was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. By 1821, it had become part of Colonial America and as such was under British rule at the time of its founding. In 1834, when Maryland became an American state, Elkton became its capital. It continued to serve as its capital until 1901 when it moved to Frederick. After becoming an independent country with its own government in 1917, Elkton experienced rapid growth during World War II due to the massive production of aluminum for war use (the town produced more than one-third of all aluminum used in America during World War II). The post-war years were tough for the community however; many businesses closed down and there was significant unemployment. In the early 21st century, Elmwood developed into a much more successful community thanks to advances in technology and online marketing techniques - much like what has been happening in nearby Frederick since 2006 where online retail has become very popular
