Frederick, Maryland is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,769 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Annapolis Metropolitan Area. Frederick was founded in 1781 by John Smith as Fort Frederick and became a town in 1834. It gained its current name from King Frederick I of Prussia who donated $10,000 to the townsfolk for development into a city. Fredricksburg was incorporated as a city on December 12, 1855 and it became an independent state on December 15, 1861. The first post office in Frederick opened on January 3, 1800 and served until May 14, 1801 due to the nearby Battle of Camden Creek which occurred that same day. The first mayor of Frederick was James Waddell and the first recorder was John Prentice. The first school teacher in what is now Frederick was Mrsephus Neeley who taught at both public schools and private academies before becoming an instructor at Howard University beginning in 1838 In addition to these early pioneers there were many other notable people associated with this community over time including: General Ambrose Burnside (1811-1882), physician Drury Hagin (1792-1872), Reverend Nathaniel Bacon (1795-1865), William Culp (1806-1875) who played football for Yale University during their undefeated championship season 1877-78; Colonel Edward Ayer Randolph (1840-1926) also an educator who served as Mayor of Baltimore from 1895 until his death; Captain Augustus Ewing Mifflin (c1785-1854) – one of America’s earliest railroad men – he built several miles of track between Baltimore and Fredericksburg; Wm Jarrell Steele (1901-) Professional wrestler born in Cecil County MD In 1865 Rev Nathaniel Bacon organized what is still called “The Fatherhood Club” which provided leadership training for future leaders while working to develop social welfare programs throughout Frederick There are numerous museums located throughout the community including: The American Art Museum - dedicated to American art since its founding in 1907; The Starling School - originally built as a girls' academy but later converted into a coeducational institution with high technology classrooms; Queen Anne's Park - home to two dozen small ponds used for fishing and swimming by children during summertime when water levels were low; Eastern Market Place - lined with antique shops dating back to 1662 featuring items from North America as well as Asia On October 5th 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt made history when he delivered his inaugural address from Ford's Theatre within Eastern Market Place after being elected president less than 10 months earlier
