In 1814, when Captain James Hagerty built a bluff on which he could see both the Susquehanna River and Yorktown Harbor, he decided to rename Gaithersburg after him because "Hagerty's Hill" looked like "the gaiety of old Scotland." The first store opened in Gaithersburg on February 20, 1814, by Major John Saylor with goods brought overland from Lancaster. Gaithersburg is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 18,840 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Prince George's County after Bowie. Gaithersburg is located on the border of Montgomery and Frederick counties and is bordered by Charles County to the east and north, Carroll County to the west and south, and Washington County to the southwest. Gaithersburg was founded as a small farming community on April 12, 1795 by James Addison Gaithers (1753-1824). The name means "place of hogs" in Welsh. The first settler arrived from Wales in 1796. In 1801 settlers bought 640 acres from John Nicholson for $2 per acre. By 1810 there were 10 families living in Gaithersburg with an aggregate value of £857 ($14,046 at current prices). In 1811 Nicholas Gaithers donated land for a town square which became known as Druid Hill Park today. In 1830 James Auld (1787-1868) built his home at 7200 Morningside Avenue on what would become Druid Hill Park Township. He was one of the early developers of Baltimore City and served as mayor three times between 1829 and 1830 before moving to Baltimore himself in 1832 to become its first attorney general under Andrew Johnson. He remains one of only two people ever named to both serve as Mayor of Baltimore (the other being Robert Eager Clark). Auld also helped found Johns Hopkins University along with Arthur Ashe who later won gold medals at both Olympics he competed in (and thus becomes one of only two Olympians ever honored posthumously), becoming America's first black athlete when he did so in 1996 against Jesse Owens winning gold over 96% discrimination! Upon his death young James Addison Gaithers bequeathed his 800-acre farm called Gwynedd near present day Gaithersburg along with some tools used during construction - including a saw blade - which has been used for driving cattle since then according to local lore!
