Greenbelt is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 22,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1785 by John Smith and his family. In 1814, Greenbelt became part of Frederick County after it was designated as a county seat. In 1827, Greenbelt became part of Prince George's County when that county was created from parts of Frederick and Washington counties. The name "Greenbelt" came about because there were no trees that grew hereabouts and people used to dress their homes with green cloth to show they were living near nature. In 1951, thethen-new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) built its first experimental farm in what is now Greenbelt Township while testing new agricultural practices around the country; this land later became known as Experiment Farm No. 5A which grows corn, soybeans and other crops on . Since then, Greenbelt has seen many changes including becoming an affluent community where high-end shopping centers are located as well as more modest housing developments such as detached single-family homes dating back to the early 1900s along with some large commercial properties like FedEx Office Park which opened up in 2006 adjacent to Interstate 395 exit 20B which led directly into Reagan National Airport making it one of the most important jobs sites for Bethesda residents
