The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) is the naval history and heritage arm of the United States Navy. NHHC was created in 1979 as a result of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1978, which authorizes the Secretary of Defense to establish an organization within the Department of Defense specifically charged with providing historical research and preservation for Naval vessels, installations, equipment, and records. The first NHHC director was Rear Admiral John J. Lewis. The command has since grown to include over 1,500 employees across three locations in Greenbelt, Maryland - Headquarters at 6th Street NW., Annex at 14th Street NW., and MHHSC at 5200 International Drive NW. In 1903, there were only fifty-four warships commissioned by the United States Navy; however by 1945 there were over 3,000 ships in service worldwide belonging to seventy-six nations including two American fleets totaling 403 ships. Greenbelt is a city located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 23,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. The area that would become Greenbelt was first developed as a farming region by settlers from Eastern Maryland in the mid-19th century. By 1870, land had been bought and sold in what is now Greenbelt for residential and commercial development. In 1907, Greenbelt became an incorporated town when it absorbed neighboring Beltsville and Rockville Centre. In 1954, the U.S. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which authorized President Eisenhower to establish military installations in Prince George's County including Greenbelt. The $US 38 million project was completed during 1955 and included two airfields (Beltsville Air Force Base and Bowie Air Base) as well as homes for 4,500 soldiers and their families on then-prime real estate near present day Church Street and Westfield Road within Greenbelt limits. At its peak before World War II, Green belt had a population of 10,,000 people; however today it has only 5,,000 residents with most of this decline due to suburbanization over the past few decades . Today much of what once made up Green Belt has been replaced by shopping malls, office complexes, housing subdivisions (especially near Bethesda), travel agencies, restaurants and other businesses catering to commuters from nearby Montgomery County or Washington D.C.. A small amount of original farmland remains within boundaries of the city limits although many home gardens are prevalent these days due to limited space within neighborhoods for expansion onto new lots etcetera). One significant remnant from early days of growth is Stroud Park which still contains several large estates surrounding a large meadow providing excellent grazing areas for farm animals such as horses since there were no streets or sidewalks then

Greenbelt, Maryland is a census-designated place located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 8,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. The name "Greenbelt" was derived from agricultural land that used to be in and around Greenbelt Arsenal National Military Park. The area now known as Greenbelt began to be developed after World War II when lots became available for development near Bethesda Naval Hospital and Prince George's County College. In 1966, the town annexed what are now eastern portions of Calverton and Millenia Heights neighborhoods to form a single municipality with its own government and school system. The community has been characterized as an "idyllic slice of rural America", with rolling hills, pastoral skies, pristine forests, and small rivers running through it. The town has a strong sense of community identity which has helped it remain relatively unchanged since its incorporation into Prince George's County in 1966. A number of shopping malls have been built within commuting distance since the early 2000s but Greenbelt remains largely self-sufficient without them; there are no public transportation services or supermarkets within walking distance. Despite this lack of infrastructure amenities, Greenbelt continues to grow economically due to its wide variety of breweries, wineries/distilleries, agricultural products (mainly fruits), antique stores/museums, and several thousand jobs in information technology and related fields
