Hagerstown is home to two colleges: Stroudsburg University and Bowie State University. The two universities are both large research universities with many programs that focus on healthcare and technology industries; they also have joint professional services offices which allow them to share resources among their students and staff members. Additionally, there are numerous businesses located within walking distance of most residents including several small grocery stores as well as pharmacies and clothing retailers localizing their products specifically for the region's unique demographics (e.g., Appalachian Appalachian).

The town was founded in 1792 by Daniel Hager and his wife Susannah Keyes. Hagerstown is named after General James Hager who commanded the American army in the War of 1812. The town was originally laid out as a small village on the northwest side of Maryland within range of Washington's army encampment at Fort McHenry which served as an important supply depot for both armies during the war. In 1798, Daniel Hager donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse which were completed in 1800. In 1846, Hagerstown became part of Prince George's County when it was formed from parts of Frederick and Anne Arundel counties. During World War II, many people from Hagerstown worked at various munitions plants throughout England and Europe. Many residents also came to America during this time to help rebuild post-war Britain because there were no jobs available back home once hostilities ended. In 1951, the first high school in Prince George's County opened its doors to students in Hagerstown. This institution would become known as Northern High School until it merged with Bowie High School in 1985 to form Bowie-Haggerstown Middle School District No 1 (BHMSD #1). Since then BHMSD #1 has grown into one of jurisdictions with over 350 students enrolling through eight schools located within walking distance of each other across three campuses: Bowie High School (northwest side), Northern High School (east side), and SouthernHighSchool(southwest side). As part of this growth, athletics have continued their prominence with teams playing all sports including wrestling, cheerleading/dance team/golf/baseball/softball etc., while music continues to be an important aspect providing cultural enrichment opportunities for students and parents alike on weekday mornings before classes start up again around lunchtime!
