It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, MD Combined Statistical Area. The name Havre De Grace comes from an old French military fortification on the Patuxent River which was built by the French in 1755 to protect their interests in North America from British attacks. The first settler in Havre De Grace was Nicholas de Rothschild who moved from London to Havre De Grace in 1764. He and his wife were among the first European settlers in what would become Prince George's County. The town began as a small farming community with only 10 residents when it incorporated as a town on May 12, 1814. At that time, Havre De Grace was one of just four townships (the others being Fredericktown, Middletown, and Westville) inPrince George's County and its boundaries would change more than once over the next century. In 1827, General John Breckinridge founded Fort Towson near modern day Bowie Street and used this site to build his new army camp for operations against Native Americans known as Fort Monroe during the American Revolutionary War. As Fort Towson grew into a larger military installation it became necessary for new colonists to move closer to government services so settlers developed separate farms within sight of Fort Towson for fear ofBritish attack or seizure of their property by General Breckinridge’s forces should they fail to toe the line In 1829 following approval from Congress, President Andrew Johnson ordered all U.S.-owned land east of Baltimore be acquired by Maryland for statehood including what is now HavreDeGrace .
