Laurel, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-National Capital Region. The town was founded in 1795 by John Smith as a small settlement on the north side of Mount Vernon Swamp. In 1814 it became a separate county and was named for General James Hagerty, who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War and afterward served as U.S. Minister to Spain and Mexico City. In 1847 Laurel acquired from Montgomery County its present location on the south side of Mount Vernon Swamp between Alexandria and Jessup Streets (now Park Heights Avenue). A post office was opened in 1848; it continued until 1955. From 1800 to 1860 agriculture dominated local life; then came logging and manufacturing with associated population growth until World War II when an influx of American servicemen increased economic activity which has since reversed course. Laurel is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 16,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore– Frederick, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first person to settle in what is now Laurel was Captain John Smith who arrived on July 20, 1692 with his three ships and two hundred men. He named his settlement "Academy" after himself and his society of boys who had been educated at a school he founded in Jamestown. First mention of a post office in Laurel dates back to 1711 when Nicholas Deane established the Post Office at Laurel Hill. In 1814, General James K. Polk transferred from Fort Monroe to become Commander of all U.S Forces in Easton and changed its name to "Laurel." The town was platted by General John Ewing under the name "Albany". Alpheus Hardy may have built one of the first homes in present-day Laurel on land that he donated to the town for use as a public square in 1825 (now known as Mount Pleasant Place). In 1876, an act was passed by Congress which designated certain areas within Baltimore City as reserves for development within Princess Anne's County includingwhat are now parts of Laurel and other communities within Pioneer Valley inside what is today Montgomery County. This Act also authorized funding for infrastructure improvements such as streets and water supplies necessary for these reserves so that they could be developed without hindrance from city residents or developers who were then located adjacent to those reserves
Laurel was founded in 1676 by two brothers, John and Charles Laurel. The town is located on the Patuxent River, about 15 miles north of Baltimore. It became a courthouse town in 1707 and an agricultural center in the late 1800s.
