The Coast Guard was first organized in 1790. The National Park Service began providing a coast guard service in 1916. In 1954, the Coast Guard purchased its present station at New Carrollton from the Maryland Board of Education. New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. New Carrollton straddles Frederick and Anne Arundel counties and includes parts of both communities as well as Howard University's campus located in nearby Baltimore. The first permanent settler in what is now New Carrollton was John Nicholson, who arrived with his family on April 14, 1786 from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Nicholson called the area "New Carollton," after Philadelphia where he had been born some few months earlier. In 1816 George Washington issued an order authorizing the erection of a military post to be named Fort Washington near present day New Carrollton. Colonel Samuel Smith began construction of the fort on March 3, 1817 and it was completed on July 1st following a siege by American Indians led by Chief Tecumseh which lasted for two weeks. The post served as an arsenal for the defense of Prince George's County until its replacement by Fort Meade in 1834. A number of small settlements were established around Fort Washington during this time including Cherry Hill (later known as White Marsh), Westmoreland Heights (later known as Bowie Heights), Easton Mills etc., but it was not until 1832 that New Carrollton became formally incorporated as a town within Prince George's County; under this name it remained until 1955 when it changed once again to its current name – New Carrollton – due to ratification of an amendment to the Maryland Constitution which granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of residency within or outside Of Maryland shores. The Coast Guard has been playing an important role in the fishing and maritime industry for over 100 years. When the United States entered World War I, the Coast Guard was activated to help support the war effort. The Coast Guard also played a critical role during the Cold War by providing security on our nation's coasts. In response to concerns about global warming, Congress passed the Clean Air Act of 1990 which requires all businesses with 25 or more employees to install emissions control devices. The Coast Guard responded by setting up its own environmental monitoring program known as Operation Iceberg. In 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act which provided $500 million for new coast guard infrastructure projects including a new headquarters and terminals at Governors Island. This money was used to build a new pier and terminal at New York City's John F Kennedy Airport which opened in 2004. Today, the Coast Guard is an essential part of America's system of defense and safety. The service provides leadership in coastal security, disaster relief, search and rescue operations, marine mammal protection, fisheries conservation and other First Amendment protected activities throughout our Nation's coasts. In 2008 alone, members of the Coast Guard responded to 553 incidents involving 308 vessels totaling 471 million gallons of oil and 79 million gallons of water; made nearly 2 million arrests; helped recover more than 1 million pounds of contraband; prevented dozens of injuries from happening; saved countless lives;and restored Naval shipyards across America

New Carrollton is located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The area now known as New Carrollton was first settled by the Potomac River Indians in the early 17th century. In 1795, New Carrollton became part of what is now Montgomery County. The town was renamed for General John Fenton, who died in 1802. New Carrollton grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1871 had a population of over 100,000. However, during the American Civil War, New Carrollton sided with Confederate forces and lost most of its inhabitants to battle or disease. In 1865, New Carrollton became an independent city and quickly regained its former stature as a major center of commerce and culture. During World War II, the city played a significant role in developing naval warfare in the Atlantic Ocean through its production of munitions and shipbuilding materials. Today, New Carrolton retains many of its historic buildings and businesses including two churches (Stapler’s Chapel & Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church), several theaters (The Dearborn Theatre & West End Playhouse), two shopping malls (New Carrolton Shopping Center & Yorktowne Mall), four Colleges/ Universities (George Washington University & Baltimore City College; Bowie State University; Marymount University; and James Madison University) and three parks (NewCarrollTON Park – which includes portions of Mount Vernon Cemetery)
New Carrollton was founded in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his party of settlers. It was named for the new town of Carroll County in Virginia, which the colonists had discovered while on their way to Maryland. The first settler in New Carrollton was Captain George Rogers. The town grew rapidly and by 1807 it had a population of over 400 people. In 1812, New Carrollton became the capital of Maryland.
