Rockville was founded in 1785 by George Washington and his father, James. The town was originally named West Point, but the name was changed to Rockville in honor of General Sir John Forbes (1755-1827). The original settlers were primarily Scottish immigrants. In 1815, the United States Congress passed a law authorizing the erection of a military post in Rockville and it became known as Fort Washington. It is also said that President George Washington took his oath of office at Fort Washington on January 17, 1789. In 1834, the Rockville Female Academy was founded and has been a public school in Rockville since that time. The first courthouse in Rockville was built in 1824 and is still used today as the courthouse Annexe. The town also had an armory from 1836 until 1861 when it closed due to lack of funding. In 1865, Congress authorized the construction of a new courthouse which became known as the State Capitol Building. It was destroyed by fire in 1899 but not replaced until 1978. Rockville is home to two major shopping malls: one located on Maryland Route 7 between Ballston Spa Road and Cumberland Avenue and another located on Upper Connecticut Street between Genesee Boulevard and Lombard Street. These two malls are both considered high-traffic areas with large populations of shoppers who come to these areas for various reasons such as shopping for food or electronics.
