Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,673 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Frederick, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury is a small city located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is one of the oldest cities in Maryland and has been continuously inhabited by people since at least the 16th century. The first permanent English settlement in present-day Salisbury was established in 1624 by Captain John Smith and his fellow English colonists as part of their quest for new land to explore after arriving in North America on HMS Discovery. At that time, the area now comprising Salisbury consisted of two villages: Newnham and Easton. In 1752, when King George II granted sections of what are now Prince George's County to three separate townships – Harford Heights, Bowie Township and Salisbury Township – the townships were named after those who had given them respectively. The town of Salisbury was chartered on February 22, 1789 by commissioners appointed by Governor John Hanson with instructions to build a courthouse and jail "in convenient place" within four miles (6 km) of each other. On November 6, 1817,Captain Nathaniel Bacon lost his life while serving as Mayor of Baltimore during an attack on a detachment under Lieutenant Colonel James Macready near West Mount Vernon; bacon became posthumously known as the "Knight Atheling" because he fought so bravely against British forces during this period. According to legend, bacon's body lay undiscovered for days after his death until it was discovered by local farmers early one morning just north of where modern-day Market Street meets First Street in downtown Salisbury. One account claims that farmer Elijah Woodcutter found bacon's body suspended from a tree overhang with an arrow piercing his heart; another version says that upon discovering bacon's body there was confusion because no flags could be seen flying from any buildings around town or there seemed to be no military presence anywhere near at that time. A privateer ship belonging to Commodore James Mooney sighted Bacon’s flagship -- HMS Victory -- off shore about 4 miles (6 km) east of town limits late on November 11 and relieved General Anthony Wayne’s army besieging Yorktown three days later without encountering any resistance from local militia or civilians living within range of likely British positions - thus proving that contemporary reports describing Bacon’s death as a suicide were false legends created by colonial officials seeking to discredit him posthumously
