Salisbury is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,594 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is one of the smallest towns in Maryland and it had only 6 residents when it was founded in 1693. The name "Salisbury" comes from two-word motto "Sali non mortem." (Do not die). The first settlers were farmers who used to go to Boston for market and bring their produce back to town. They would then put it into barns on the square which still stands today. Today's downtown area was built on this square between 1798 and 1800 by Colonel John Smith as part of his land grant from King George II. The courthouse that stands today original was built in 1806 by General Robert Ewing as part of his gift to the town. In 1827, a new courthouse was erected and named after Judge Isaac Noyes because he helped build the first schoolhouse in Salisbury Township. This building still stands today and is used as the municipal office building for Salisbury Township government. In 1898, Salisbury became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six trustees who administered all aspects of city government including streets, parks, education, finance & planning etc.. On July 1st 1916 Salisbury lost its charter due to lack of support from voters but regained it within 2 years through referendum passed by majority vote with 54% Yes! The realignment of municipal government happened within Greater Baltimore Area so most people forget about us now until we need help!
