Salisbury, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,028 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by Frederick to the south and east, Takoma Park to the north, Salisbury Township to the west and southwest, and Calvert City to the northwest. The name "Salisbury" derives from "Scold's Hill", an overlook on Salisbury Heights that overlooked much of present-day Prince George's County. As early as 1692 (or earlier), land in what is now Salisbury was sold for £4 per acre to Nathaniel Bacon of Worcester who named it after himself. The town site was surveyed in 1711, and construction began on a courthouse in 1714. In 1851 when Prince George's County was created from parts of Washington and Baltimore counties, part of Salisbury became part of its new limits. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 5,956 people residing in thetownship: 2% were married couples living together; 0% had a female householder with no husband present; 50% were non-families; 36% were families; and 20% were someone else’s householder/co-worker. Salisbury is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The town was founded by English colonists in 1727 as Westville. In 1818, it became a part of Prince George's County and changed its name to Salisbury after the ancient village of Samosata in England. The first settler in Salisbury was John Witherspoon, who arrived in 1767. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Witherspoon Station. The town experienced some growth during the late 19th century when many people came to work on the Eastern Shore Railroad. The railroad left Salisbury with few buildings but plenty of land for agriculture and development. Today, much of that agricultural acreage still remains within the boundaries of the town limits while some portions have been developed into larger towns such as Hyattsville or Takoma Park
Salisbury was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith. It became a town in 1813 and was incorporated as a city in 1854. The area now known as Salisbury was first settled by the Algonquins, who were hunter-gatherers. They built their homes of logs near the river where they hunted deer,elk, and other game. The area became more populated when land south of the River Potomac sold for farming purposes. The original town center was located on High Street between Market and State Streets. In 1813, part of what is now downtown Salisbury was burned down by British forces during the War of 1812. The city's first mayor was James Prentice. In 1861, it annexed Carroll County which had been separate from Maryland since 1792. On July 1, 1886, Salisbury became one of the original thirteen cities in Maryland granted special status due to its proximity to Washington D.C., its large population growth rate during the late 19th century (it grew from 12,000 to 25,000 people during that time), and its role as an important transportation hub on the Potomac River valley. During World War I, Salisbury served as a training ground for military personnel stationed in nearby Alexandria Naval Hospital and later at Valley Forge Army Camp north of present-day Arlington National Cemetery
