The town was founded in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his wife Pocahontas among other settlers who left Williamsburg after the British burned it down. The first store in Salisbury opened on Main Street in 1786. In 1801, General Robert Ewell captured Montgomery County from the British and gave it to Prince George's County. In 1812, General Thomas Starke forced the surrender of Baltimore City to Ulysses S Grant at Camden Courthouse which led to violence that lasted for several days across Prince George's County such as "the Battle of Blair Hill." In 1814–15 Artemas Ward fought against Tecumseh at Monmouth Battlefield which broke out when Tecumseh felt insulted by a private soldier named Wilkinson who had given him an ice cream cone while they were fighting. Afterward many residents migrated to what is now West Virginia or Kentucky due to malaria outbreaks which spread throughBaltimore during this time period
