Takoma Park is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Alexandria metropolitan area. The town was founded by colonists from England in 1784 as Takoma Township. In 1835, it became Takoma Park when the township was divided into two sections, one for black Americans and one for whites. The original name of the town may be derived from "tak" or "temple" because of its high concentration of African American residents at that time. In 1966, Takoma Park incorporated as a city under the name of Chevy Chase City and held its first election on November 3 that year. On February 14, 2017, Takoma Park annexed Jones Falls which had been part of Fredericktown since 1836 but not incorporated until then due to lack of support from both jurisdictions.
