Adrian was founded in 1855 by John F. Keyser and his brother, Peter. The brothers started a small grocery store on State Street in Adrian and began to roast coffee. They first roasted coffeebeans for their own use then selling them to other businesses and individuals. In 1865, the Keysers moved to Detroit and opened a larger store on Woodward Avenue. They continued to roast coffee until 1898 when they closed their business due to economic reasons.

There were two settlers in Adrian in 1837: John Davenport and his family open a store on Main Street. They started trading goods with the Native Americans living near them before settling down to build a ferry boat company called The Davenport Manufacturing Company in 1840 which became one of the largest ferry companies in the country. In 1846 they built their first home on what is now Second Street; this was followed by another house on Third Street in 1851 when they founded their current business empire which includes more than 40 businesses today including restaurants, retail stores, hotels/motels, printing presses and warehouses! In 1886 Adrian's first post office opened with ZIP code 48201; it continued to operate until 1978 when it moved to its present location on Kalamazoo Avenue! On July 1st 1905 Adrian incorporation as a town under MSA control was approved making it one of just eight towns within MetropolitanDetroit Area! The growth of downtown Adrian slowed during the early 1990s as new milling plants were built along I- michigan State Road 248 (now Kalamazoo Avenue), but picked up again during 2000-2005 as we saw intense job creation due to deregulation and increased competition from other Midwestern cities like Lansing (population 24 million) and Grand Rapids (population 14 million). This economic boom brought many people into town such as restaurateurs who bought property adjacent to old mills or entrepreneurs who set up shop next door to fast food restaurants or gas stations. In recent years there have been efforts made by community organizations such as Downtown Adrian Partnership (DAP) to resurrect downtown cores around commercial areas while continuing redevelopment efforts along Kalamazoo avenue which has led to some successes such as revival of local art galleries or resurgence of small businesses adjacent thereto - all without displacing any permanent residents!
