Alpena is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the east bank of the St. Clair River. The population was 25,033 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint–Warren–Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alpena's ZIP code is 48810. The first European settlement in what became Alpena was by French fur traders in 1795, who established a trading post on the banks of the river and named it "Fort Michilimackinac." In 1807, land grants were issued to Captains John Green and Isaac Winchester for their settlements at Fort Michilimackinac and around present-day Alpena Township; these tracts being bounded on one side by present-day Oakland County (southwest), on the other by Washtenaw County (northwest). In 1814, Colonel Lewis Cass placed an ad in a periodical entitled "The Farmer" for settler applications for land between Houghton Creek and Ottawa River within what are now Fulton Township (now Muskegon Heights) and Ottawa Township (now Grayling Borough). More than 200 applicants came forward with claims to lands that would become Alpena; only 24 were accepted and started work on their farms in October 1815. A post office called "Alpena" was established in 1827; it changed its name to "Flint" in 1837 because of concerns about possible Indian attacks against merchants travelling through that area on their way to or from Detroit or other areas west of Lake Superior. A railroad station was built at this location in 1870 but closed down operation several years later due to lack of traffic; today's Amtrak Station at Alpena Depot serves as a local stop for passengers traveling northward from Flint or southward from Muskegon Heights/Grayling Boroughs. On Dec. 10, 1948 President Harry S Truman ordered the activation of the United States Air Force's first gift history program. The program was designed to commemorate and celebrate the synergies among military, civilian and service members during World War II and its aftermath. Since then, air force deployed gift programs have become a cherished tradition for USAF members and their families. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the activation of Operation Crossroads, which remembrance our fallen servicemen and women from World War II. In commemoration of that event, we are honoring air force deployed gifts with a special focus on items that have impacted USAF members in some way or another – from technology advancements to unique fashion pieces.
Alpena is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Lansing and about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Grand Rapids. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Rochester-Battle Creek Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alpena has been inhabited by the Pottawatomie people for centuries, and it became a town in 1872 when its predecessor settlement, Alpena Lake, was established. The first settler in what would become Alpena was John Atwater, who arrived in December 1824 from Detroit with his family and six others aboard the brig Albion. He patented 2 square miles (5 hectares) east of present day Alpena on January 12, 1825 to his brother-in-law Daniel Herrmann and wife Martha Kapperer. By 1830 there were over 100 settlers living in what would become Alpena Township; by 1840 there were 375 residents living within its limits alone . In 1872 the townships were reorganized into villages and incorporated as townships; however, only part of present day Alpena township was annexed to Battle Creek as a village in 1903 due to protests from residents who wanted their portion of the township added back to their municipality. The early history of this small town is intertwined with that of nearby Lansing which at that time had no city limits and therefore grew rapidly because it housed most all branches of government including an elementary school, jail, post office and several businesses such as a grocery store/grocery mart/, bank/factory/, sawmill/, lumberyard/. Today many remnants still remain from those days including two blocks off I-94 just south of downtown where an old grocery store used to stand – now housing apartments – while another block further east housed a post office until it closed around 1960s amid complaints from residents over high levels OF traffic noise coming from neighboring Battle Creek which they felt had gotten outof hand since then thanks largely to Interstate 94 being built nearby bypassing much smaller communities like theirs altogether). In addition to serving as home base for federal troops during World War II - primarily stationed at Camp Hastings near Mackinac Island - various other military installations also existed here such as Fort George Gillem Army Park on Saginaw River just north of town proper while other major facilities included Air Force Base Mather AFB across I-94 Exit 129A about 10 miles northwest served as storage depot for USAF aircraft missile launch sites before eventually decommissioning during peacetime following the Cold War era; today you can find pieces remaining from both bases if you visit southernmost tip Of Mackinac Island known locally simply as “Maclean” while remote ashore Airport Road leads visitors Driveway adjacent US 13 southwest /RNAV Ramp Terminal Mariana Islands Outpost & Visitors Center 0mi SE via helicopter
