The USS Constitution was the first of the U.S. Navy's three steam-powered warships, and served in the late 18th century as a flagship of Commodore David Porter's squadron during the American Revolution. She was eventually decommissioned in 1795 and laid up at Mobile Bay until she was purchased by Michigan State College in 1902, converted into an aviation school ship and renamed Alpena (HS-1) after then-Governor George W. Alpena of Michigan. The college used her for instruction from 1910 to 1957. In 1957, she was sold to Japan and renamed Formosa (FJ-6). She served as a training ship for Japanese military pilots before being scrapped in 1978 at Yokosuka Naval Base.
Alpena is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,615 at the 2010 census. The name means "hiking mountain." Alpena is part of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Alpena was Jens Hansen who arrived in 1814. He built a cabin on the east side of the river and named it after his home village of Aalborg in Denmark. In 1825, another Danish immigrant named Søren Larsen purchased land adjacent to Hansen's original holdings and began to build a log cabin known as Larsen's Cabin. By 1830, most of what would become Alpena had been developed with stores, homes and churches existing for about sixty years before being destroyed by fire in 1871. In 1875, George Stephenson became Englewood Township trustee and suggested that the township be renamed for General James K. Polk because he felt that Polk was an important figure in American history during the time when Alpena was developing its economy as a lumber center. On July 1, 1886, Englewood Township became Alpena Township with same boundaries as Washtenaw County. When Washtenaw County formed from Wayne County on November 3rd 1907 it included all but one precinct within Alpena Township including precincts 3 & 4 which were then located south of town on Haggerty Road (now I-96). The only exception was precinct 7 which remained within Wayne County until it discontinued operations on May 15th 1912 when all its residents moved into Lansing due to numerous economic reasons including prohibition laws enacted by Governor John Lathrop Dearborn effective January 1st 1911 AfterWayneCounty disbanded there were no more wards or precincts so precincts 3 & 4 were reorganized into north & south streets separated from Haggerty Road by Veteran's Memorial Drive . North Street ran from west to east while South Street ran from east to west

Alpena is a small town in St. Clair County, Michigan, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Cheboygan, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Alpena was founded in 1836 by David Lapp and others as a trading post on the Kawkawa River west of Detroit. In 1846, the village was renamed for General James Alpena who had led Ulysses S. Grant's successful campaign against Mexico in1848. The town site changed hands several times before it became permanent in 1892 when it became part of Lansing Township. The first wave of immigrants to arrive in Alpena came from Hungary during World War I and were employed by local farmers in agriculture ormanufacturing goods such as soap and cigars; however, most soon left for other parts of America because they could not find work there after the war ended. Only two people - Horace Seibert and his brother-in-law Johann Ziegler - managed to stay and build a home here permanently after their arrival; both men died within a few years due to illnesses contracted during wartime life on military bases overseas. Alpena was first settled in 1827 by Algonquin Indians. The town was founded on the east bank of the Grand River, about two miles south of today's Alpena. The original village site is now lost in history. The township was organized in 1855, and became a city in 1907. In 1955, it merged with neighboring East Lansing to form Macomb Township.
