Auburn Hills is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 27,471 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Macomb County and one of the most populous cities in Michigan. Auburn Hills is also home to the University of Michigan–Dearborn campus. The area that would become Auburn Hills was originally part of what was called "the Township of Newberry" which was located in Monroe Township on the southern border of Macomb County. On April 1, 1837, Newberry's section became part of what would become Auburn Hills when its town charter was granted. Auburn Hills first blossomed as a small agricultural community with few businesses or residents until the early 20th century when new industry began to grow in central Michigan around Detroit and other large metropolitan areas. Businesses such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation and Chrysler made their presence felt throughout much of this period through their factories and research labs located near downtown Auburn Hills and other parts of central Michigan. Auburn Hills, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 362,876 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit and Lansing. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Auburn Hills was founded on December 1, 1892 by locals John C. Goodrich and James Worthy as a small community named Highland Heights due to its high altitude and health benefits associated with the nearby hillsides (the highest point in Oakland County). The name "Auburn" had been used previously in villages located near what is now Auburn Hills; however, no definitive connection has been found between these earlier occurrences and this current municipality. The first post office for Auburn Hills opened on November 3, 1893, and was renamed Eastlake on November 16th of that year due to changing postal regulations which required cities with more than 5,000 residents to have their own post office. On February 14th, 1896, Eastlake became Auburn when a new township was formed from parts of Clinton Township along with other changes including annexing portions of Dearborn Heights and Southfield Township to form Auburn Hills Township. In 1913-1914 an act of Congress approved plans by then-Mayor George Hynes for expansion into what are now Farmington Hills and Livonia through annexation of those townships - both areas were already burgeoning suburban communities at that time but failed to materialize because War Department planners saw only potential military use for Farmington Hills while Livonia would have been too crowded and served primarily as an agricultural center catering to eastern Michiganders dreaming of moving westward into their newly acquired territory (the so-called Great Lakes Region). It wasn't until the early 21st century that any definitive evidence emerged connecting either townhood specifically or township growth overall with Army Base Ladd/Noa which began operations at Fort Hindman in Gratiot County on October 15th 1942 as one component within World War II military recruitment drive following General Dwight D Eisenhower's directive Noa should provide "a secure base from which American forces can operate anywhere in Europe." Withdrawal from Army Base Ladd/Noa occurred less than two weeks later on October 23rd following reports by Danish air force pilots who observed heavy German activity adjacent to property leased by Army Base Ladd/Noa - though not directly related to war activities cited by Army Commander Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Biddle - leading some observers to believe that withdrawal may have been engineered rather than accidental given significance attached thereto (it's worth noting that even today there are few if any visible reminders outsideFort Hindman itself linkingLadd/Noa directly backto World War II).
