Battle Creek is an unincorporated community in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. It lies on the Battle Creek River and was known as "The Foothills" until it became a city in 1907. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,554. Battle Creek is one of two cities in Kalamazoo County that were not included in the 2010 census. The other city is Grand Rapids. The first white people to live in what is now Battle Creek arrived in 1812 when John Kinzie and his party crossed the Red River from Canada. They named their new settlement after battle creek where they had fought many engagements with Native Americans. By 1814, there were about fifty settlers living here. In 1824, General George Washington's army invaded Michigan and Battle Creek became part of the war effort against him; consequently, many buildings still standing reminders of this early time are military forts such as Fort Dearborn and Fort Atkinson which stood on opposite banks of the river until 1909. In 1857, Ernest Halsey moved to Battle Creek from Greenville Township, Illinois and opened a grocery store at Seventh Street and Eastern Avenue; he soon became known as "The Father of Battle Creek". In 1865 Halsey partnered with Isaac Niles to found The Northern Michigan Railroad; this railroad would provide transportation between Detroit and Grand Rapids through Battle Creek while also providing jobs for local residents (the first train ran through town on December 1st). On July 14th 1898 a tornado touched down near downtown Battle Creek killing eight people including three infants who were sucked into wreckage created by the tornado. This event remains one of most tragic events to occur during the 20th century within our county boundaries Today much has changed since then: Downtown has been redeveloped into loft style apartments while Main Street retains its historic architecture with examples such as The Masonic Temple remaining unchanged since 1899 However some aspects have not change such as Staple Foods located just off I-94 adjacent to I-75
The Battle Creek Campaign of 1812 was a military engagement fought in the year 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. The campaign occurred during the War of 1812, and was part of the larger war against France. In early February 1812, General Anthony Wayne launched an attack on British forces at Fort Dearborn in what is now Michigan. The battle ensued, and soon after American forces emerged victorious. The Americans captured over 100 British soldiers as well as a large number of cannons and munitions.
