Benton Harbor is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern edge of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Benton Harbor is one of three cities in Wayne County, Michigan that are both included in the Detroit metropolitan area and each has its own government and services. Benton Harbor's history dates back to 1834 when an American fur trader, John Benton, opened a trading post here with his brother-in-law Major George Stephenson. The town was originally named after Colonel Isaac Benton (1792-1869), who served as secretary to President James K. Polk during World War I and later represented Michigan in Congress from 1923 until his death in 1925. In 1835 Stephenson erected a toll road between what are now downtown Benton Harbor and Farmington Hills which became known as "The State Road" or "The National Road". The first store was built on what is now First Street near current day Park Avenue in 1837 by Aiken & Company which traded goods along The State Road including lumber and hardware products; it continued to be open until 1951 when it closed because of competition from local stores such as M&Ms Place and Granny Smith apples stores.. After years of discussion, a committee appointed by Governor Daytay Ladd recommended that the name for this large central business district be changed from "Benton Harbor" to "Hometown". On October 3rd 1905, voters adopted a resolution naming their new central business district "Hometown." In 1906 Movement Picture Corporation moved into what is now City Hall Building #2 across Second Street from where it had been occupying vacant space since 1902 when it leased an old blacksmith shop on Third Street cornering Main Avenue from Hometown Brewing company owned by Jens Ditlevson (1854-1924). This building still stands today as City Hall Annex #1 across Second Street from where Mayor Arvid Olson's office used to stand before he moved into another building next door also occupied by MPRC during its early days until 1978 when they moved out completely due to fire code changes necessitated by suburbanization which then displaced all but two businesses within 1/4 mile of downtown streetscape with parking available only east or west off major thoroughfares! In 1984 Movement Picture Corporation vacated their second property across Main Avenue south of Arvid Olson's original building after 20 years occupancy followed by Local 691 Chevrolet Dealership Inc., Inc., then Simply Red - one year before their lease expired; both properties remain empty today although adjacent alleyways have been developed for housing units since then! After decades without development outsideof just occasional garage sales or home owner associations' use thereof many residents voted in 2006 to request that city hall annexe landward extending ontoold Whiting Paper Mill Site directly west along Third Street northlake past current day Gaber Drive providing office space for city staff plus access to water and sewer facilities currently used by private developers Furthermore residents chanted thruoutowntown asking mayor June Nystrom if she would consider developing retentionbufferland adjoining Beltline park upstream resulted in unanimous vote yea at next meeting resulting in annexation being granted subjectTo further review By Planning Commission

Benton Harbor is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, and is part of the Metro Detroit area. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. It is one of two towns in Benton County (the other being Dearborn Heights) and is located on the Michigan-Ontario border. The current mayor is Nancy Kopp and the town council has six members. The first settler in Benton Harbor was John Dutton who arrived there on July 4, 1824 with his family from Canada. He had come to sell goods at what would later be known as "Dutton's Landing." Dutton erected a small cabin near where he now lives and named it after himself, meaning harbor or landing place in French. By 1830, there were about 20 settlers living in Benton Harbour, most of whom were farmers or fishermen. In 1834, Peter Ziegler bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land east of present day Benton Harbor from Abram Sibley for $100 cash plus 10 cents per acre until paid off within ten years; this land became Ziegler Township which was organized December 12th that year by territorial governor David Dixon with four trustees appointed by him: George Wirthlin (president), Augustus Bemis (vice president), Amos Nash (treasurer), and Levi Coffin (judge). In 1840, Snyder built a log cabin on what would become his farmstead west of today's post office building; this cabin served as the first house in township when it was formed 2 years later. This pioneer period ended around 1851 when all Manitobans were required to apply to become citizens so that they could vote in township elections then held every November 5th - an event still celebrated annually by local residents today! On May 20th 1853 – just days before Indian Removal Act took effect – Wayne Paulding sold 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present day Benton Harbor to Peter Ziegler for $3200 dollars including 60%aconcertoed interest at 10% per annum for life! This property future became known as "Ziegler Point". On September 9th 1861 during the American Civil War Military District #2 boundaries were redrawn creating new counties - Kentuckiana lying south along I-75 while Clinton County lay north between I-75 and US-41 forming Central Michigans Territory! At this time Fort Traverse was established just north of modern day Benton Harbor - duties assumed by First Brigade Army Regiment #9 under General Lew Wallace...entitled Northwest Michigan Territorial Militia...and continued until 1862 when its Garrison Commander changed to Captain John Aikenhead commandant Third United States Infantry Regiment #5 responsible for operations east side Main Street from point where fortifications began northeastward through downtown pastpresentdayBenton Harbor into Ottawa River...a distance now grown into Eastern Market Place! Life here change from frontier farmer to garrison soldier during Civil War era! A store opened up soon afterwards on what would become Main Street which attracted many soldiers barracks etc., some continuing into their 70s still living right next door & others moving away over time due primarily to lack of military housing nearby & also because no major industry existed hereabouts back then unlike today’s thriving city center full Of people
