Berkley is a small town in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Berkley settlers were farmers who arrived from Sweden in 1824 and began to farm land on the east side of River Road. They named their village after William Berkley, an early settler and owner of some land in what is now downtown Berkley. The first school in Berkley was built on what is now State Street in 1835. In 1836, a sawmill was started by Captain George Willoughby and his brother-in-law Amos Kendall with help from Major John Hawkins. In 1848, Professor Abraham Lincoln taught a class at Washington High School while living in nearby Grand Rapids for one year before returning to Illinois to serve as Governor of that state during the Mexican American War. When he left Illinois for Michigan two years later, he took his students with him and established Washtenaw Normal School as one of the first high schools in Michigan. Berkley is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 514,716 at the 2000 census, making it the 7th most populous city in Michigan and the 9th most populous city in all of United States. Berkley is also home to Kent State University, one of two campuses within Wayne County and one of three campuses within Washtenaw County. The first permanent settler in what would become Berkley was James Sutherlin, who founded a cabin on Canfield Creek in 1824. In 1827, John Crain settled on land near what is now Berkley before moving to Wickliffe Township in 1828. Crain's son-in-law, David Robertson established a farmstead on what became Baldwin Street south of town in 1840. The first post office called "Baldwin" was opened in 1850; it served as the village's main artery until 1889 when it became part of Berkley proper. In 1861, four men from Detroit area – Hemanus Gibbs (brother of Samuel Gibbs), Augustus Kelley (brother-in-law of David Robertson), George Saunders (son-in-law of Job Bates) and John Wylie – organized what would become the first local bank in Michigan with their own funds after escaping from slavery aboard an Underground Railroad steamboat called "Cato". They named their bank "First National Bank" because they believed that only banks could provide financial security for black people during the American Civil War. First National Bank survives to this day as a community institution located just off Ionia Road east behind Mercy hospital across from East Central High School Unit B1A1A1 inside Mercy Tower which stands vacant since October 2016 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Lovely Warren despite having no ownership stake whatsoever over First National Bank which closed its doors less than two years ago amidst numerous taxpayer protestations throughout her tenure as mayor including efforts by her successor Mike Duggan to reopen it The earliest house built outside present day Berkley was erected about 1800 on land now known as North Meridian Road just north of Centerline Mall adjacent to today's Heathcare Shoppingcenter which then included farmland used for sugar cane growing until 1901 when that area was developed into downtown Berkley through eminent domain proceedings initiated by then Township Trustee Charles Fenton following a public outcry over rising property values aroundtown resulting from unprecedented development patterns taking place primarily along Woodward Avenue such as highrise apartment towers overlooking downtown park Blockshadow Boulevard later renamed Schaefer Boulevard developer Donny Moynihan plans continue today with new developments around town centered along Ionia Road between downtown and Southgate giving rise once again to longstanding concerns about traffic congestion caused largely by uncontrolled developmentindustrial suburban sprawl Our story does not end there however our journey began many years ago with humble beginnings setting foot upon these shores
