Berkley is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 24,609 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Washtenaw County. It is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Berkley was John Snyder in 1824. In 1827, the town plat was filed and named for James Haines Berkley who had settled in what is now central Detroit two years earlier. In 1830, David Beal purchased land east of present-day Berkley from James Haines Berkley and laid out a new town on his property which became known as Bealville after him. In 1835, Augustus Kelley platted what would become downtown Berkley and named it for himself; he also opened up tracts of land to settlement along with other investors including George Stephenson and Lewis Cassady. By 1840, over one hundred homes were built in downtown Berkley with about sixty residents living there alone or in small groups that formed clusters around major businesses like the Dyer Sawmill and Brewery or near churches like First Baptist Church (now Trinity Lutheran). When Washtenaw County was created on November 3rd, 1796 from parts of Oakland Township plus Lapeer Township plus part of Wayne Township plus Ottawa village (all within Wayne County), Berkley lay within Lapeer Township only but its settlers quickly realized that it would be their capital should they establish it as such because Livingston County had not yet been organized as a political subdivision under the new government structure. Accordingly on February 10th 1800 by Order of Govt.,Lapeer township united with Berkely to form Washtenaw county’s first jurisdictional unit consisting of all but 1/3rd’sof present day Kentuckiana comprising all lands lying eastward nwward ndwestward OF Saginaw bay shoreline subject only to “the righteously bought tract” now included within Lansingburgh Borough…..This order formalized lansingburgh burgesses incorporation into Washtenaw county Sept 15th 1800….It appears that by c1800 lansingburgh had already become an important center for industry & commerce due largely to its location proximate to saginaw harbor
