Big Rapids, Michigan is home to the United States Army's Third Infantry Division. The division was first activated in 1903 as a part of the Mexican-American War and served until it was disbanded in 1946. It reactivated in 1968 as a result of the Vietnam War. The division has been stationed in Big Rapids since its activation. The Third Infantry Division's history can be traced back to 1903, when the division was formed from elements of the 2nd U.S. Infantry Regiment and 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment (later redesignated 1st Cavalry) under command of General John Pershing during World War I. The unit fought at Arroyo Seco and later San Juan Hill before being reassigned to duty in Mexico City for duty against anarchists on February 14, 1916; however, no action occurred as a result of their arrival there because President Woodrow Wilson prohibited military activity within Mexican territory without prior approval from both chambers of Congress. Upon its return to America following World War I, the 3rd Infantry Division was assigned toament 4th Corps Area near Big Rapids where it participated in maneuvers throughout 1927 and 1928 before finally deployment to Europe during October/November that year pursuant to General Order No.–542 which called for all American forces by November 10th “to prepare for an emergency landing at Calais if war should break out with Germany” In March 1929, after participating in exercises off California coast along with 1st Armored Division then newly activated split off from 4th Corps Area commanded by Major General Winthrop Rockefeller (a West Point graduate) – III Corps Headquarters moved into Thorsness Barracks next door on Broadway between Capitol Mall and Saginaw Street while command posts were established at Camp Cooke (now Macomb Community College), Fort Snelling (then Stroudsburg State University) and Fort Harker(now Harrison High School). In late October 1929 elements arrived at Calais awaiting orders issued thenceforth authorizing them operations ashore: First Battalion Combat Engineers landed early morning September 15th[1] just north of Boulogne airfield followed soon thereafter by other units including Headquarters Company Airdrops Field Artillery[2] troops attached thereto began bombarding German positions around town objectives such as Courcelle Airfield[3][4] battery position #8 east of town church lay openfields about mile NNE Colleville airfield also captured this objective observing artillery fire w/ Capts JG Wegener USN & Capt Rolf Preuss KA batteries Attacked machine gun post located several hundred yards WNW some troops came ashore unopposed but upon reaching ground observed helplessly abandoned weapons tanks & trucks abandoned behind enemy lines company headquarters informed commanding general they had done nothing wrong fired warning shots over heads retreating troops many Germans were killed or wounded but no one answered fire most likely dueMilitary Code forbade suicide attacks against friendly forces Most probably resulted w/few casualties among American Expeditionary Troops who had fought side “openly” French soldiers working alongside us during WWI Many residents hereabouts still remember days long ago when garrison consisted only men locals knew & everyone could call you "Uncle" or "Mama" today 3 divisions plus National Guard present

Big Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ottawa County. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Ottawa County by population. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Big Rapids has been an agricultural center for decades, with numerous farms and plantations dotting its landscape. The city's economy has shifted to municipalities services and business growth over agriculture since 2007. The first permanent settler in what is now Big Rapids was Nicholas Lappert in 1827, who founded a trading post on the east bank of Grand River opposite present-day downtown Big Rapids. Lappert named his post "Laportown", after himself and his brother-in-law Peter Laporte (1781–1860). In 1829 Nicholas' son John Lappert moved from Laportown to start a new community on land along the north side of White Lake just east of present day downtown Big Rapids. John's grandson Augustus Laporte (1802–1885) continued developing this village until 1830 when he sold it to William Hullenbeck (1800–1880), one of three men who formed Hullenbeck & Company, Merchants Warehousemen vies I n Western Michigan United States Land company which later became Detroit Shore Line Railroad Co., predecessor to Amtrak The original town site lay within what is today Dearborn Heights neighborhood on Woodward Avenue between Gratiot Avenue and Live Oak Boulevard; portions are now within Midtown Detroit neighborhoods such as Plymouth Park or Midtown Eastside Hullenbeck & Company processed goods arriving from Canada via Mackinac Island until 1836 when they began shipping goods direct from Canandaigua, New York City

Big Rapids, Michigan is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 6,513 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in the Lower Peninsula after Kalamazoo. The first settlement in what is now Big Rapids was made by David White and his family in 1797. They named their community for large rapids on the Rouge River which they saw as a threatening obstacle to their trading activities with other communities upstream. The rapids were destroyed by an eruption from an unknown volcano some time later and the town never recovered from that loss of economic virginity. However, Big Rapids did slowly begin to grow as a commercial center thanks to its location on US-12 and its easy access to transportation links. In 1824, John Ladd founded the village of Laddsford on land he had purchased from Joseph Cook in what is now town square. By 1840, Big Rapids had become one of Michigan's largest towns and boasted a population of over 5,000 people. It wasn't until 1892 that Big Rapids finally attained true municipal status when it became part ofKalamazoo Township. However, even then it continued to experience rapid growth due mainly to its position as an agricultural center - not least because maize (corn) was America's new trade commodity during this period and farmers could easily transported it into cities like Kalamazoo for processing into flour or feedstock for livestock
Big Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site for what is now Big Rapids was first settled by Potawatomi Indians in 1812 as part of their westward migration from encircling Ottawa County to seek new land west of the Great Lakes. The town name was likely derived from "BIG rapids" or "big rapids". In 1836, John Bowers established a trading post here on Big Creek with other fur traders and missionaries working among the Potawatomi. In 1847, Big Rapids became an incorporated village through Act No. 4 of that year; it had a population of seven Hundred fifty-six persons. The canal system connecting Lake Superior and Chicago started construction in1848 and ended near Big Rapids in 1853; traffic along the route increased steadily as settlers sought to escape harsh winters on the Upper Peninsula and find rich agricultural land around Detroit.. By 1870, when navigation improved enough for steamboats to navigate these waters regularly, Big Rapids had become an important port on the Lower Peninsula Towanda River corridor.. On July 1, 1890, after years of debate between rival factions within Dearborn County over succession to governance when county administrator Alonzo Hines died suddenly age 57 (the death created an open-ended power struggle that would continue until 1893), both villages merged into one municipality under Dearborn Township official George Heiskell.. The city's initial growth came during World War II as its strategic location made it a natural choice for military housing; many big companies built factories here such as Ford Motors plants #2 and 3 which opened in 1941 followed by General Motors #4 in 1945/46 etc., while small businesses grew up around these plants including Midland Brewing Company & Brewster’s Department store which were both demolished in 1961.. After war its residents went back into business but there has been very little recent development except planned demolition finally stopped last year due to low demand following bankruptcy .. Downtown redevelopment plans are still ongoing but have not yet materialized
