Big Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 497 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest city in Michigan and one of its ten cities with a population over 1 million. It is home to Chrysler Automobiles Plymouth Plant, which manufactures Plymouth cars, as well as other heavy industrial and commercial operations. The name "Big Rapids" comes from the rapids that flow through the community. Big Rapids once had a post office called Big Rapids Station on state road 10 west of Lansing. According to some reports, Big Rapids also used to have a post office called "Rapid City". According to The Detroit News archives from 1912-1964, there were two churches in Big Rapids; First Baptist Church (now closed) and Methodist Episcopal Church (now closed). In 1916 when Kalamazoo County was dissolved into Trumbull and Wayne counties, Big Rapids became part of Trumbull County but continued to use its first name until 1924 when it changed again to "Big Rapids". In 1924, work began on what would become Chrysler's new plant located in Gratiot Township northeast of town on Michigan State Road 10 east of town. The plant would eventually produce more than 2 million square feet (9300 m²) of Productivity growth during its peak years between 1957 and 1984! When production ended in 1984 due to economic reasons various companies either sold their products or relocated out of Midland County altogether creating an abandoned community known as "The Hills"

Big Rapids is a small village in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Grand River. The population was 1,237 at the 2010 census. Big Rapids is part of the Kalamazoo-area and is bordered by Lansing to the north and east, Muskegon Heights to the south, and East Lansing to the west. The Village of Big Rapids was platted in 1836 by John Armstrong as a trading post along what would become known as Old Michigan Route 24. Armstrong named his settlement after his river landing site in Scotland—the first landings on what would become modern day Michigan. The post office opened in 1837 and was known as Armisteadville until it was renamed Big Rapids in 1878 after General James Halleck's victory over Mexican forces at Battle of Buena Vista Ridge near present day Detroit. The Village of Big Rapids prospered during its early years thanks to its location on one of the most important trade routes between Great Lakes ports and major cities on Earth including Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo and New York City. In 1850, lumber baron Isaac Noyes built a sawmill on current day Main Street which continues to be an important economic factor for Big Rapids today. However during prohibition efforts led by governor Hiram Johnson things started going wrong for Big Rapids with bootlegging becoming an increasingly profitable business activity for organized crime figures such as Al Capone In 1920s local resident Harry Wertz founded Wertz Motors Incorporated (WMI) which became one of North America's largest car manufacturers producing everything from luxury cars to pickups trucks During World War II many locals enlisted in service and many businesses closed but some such as WMI continued production while donations were sent back home After war ended Local farmers began planting crops again however this time using tractors instead of horses due to lack of available equipment Although there were still occasional bootlegging incidents it didn't really take off until 1970 when gambling became an increasing problem within town limits
Big Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Muskegon County. The population was 15,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Holland, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 23,245 as of 2010. The first settler in Big Rapids was James Wallis who moved to the area in 1836. In 1837, Jesse Latham established a mill on the Hiawatha River which became one of the largest mills in Michigan. By 1860, Big Rapids had a population of 100 people and by 1870 it had reached 250 people. In 1872, Big Rapids became an unincorporated community when it was merged with what are now Holland and Westland townships to form Muskegon County. The name "Big Rapids" originated from rapids on the Hiawatha River where settlers could go for entertainment during their trips downstream from Grand Traverse Bayou (now Lake Huron). The first post office in BigRapids opened on July 1, 1875; it remained open until February 9th, 1888 when it changed its name to "Muskegon Heights". On October 14th 1898, BigRapids incorporated as a city under the name "Big Rapids". The current mayor is Darrell Knaussman who has been elected every year since he was sworn into office on November 3rd 2006
