It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The first Cadillac Coffee House was opened by Mr. and Mrs. George Grosse in October of 1892. They served coffee and doughnuts from their small business until it burned down in 1923. In 1924, Cadillac's first millionaire, Maurice “Mop” Heineman, bought the Coffee House and renamed it The Maurice Heineman Café. In 1933, he sold the café to Harry Jaffe who kept it until his death in 1984. By then, The Maurice Heineman Café had become one of Cadillac's most popular tourist attractions and an important part of its history. In 1984, Harry Jaffe's son and successor as owner of The Maurice Heineman Café., Don Jaffe began serving Tactical Coffee from his father's old cafe location across town at 715 W State St.. This same year also saw the opening of Donny & Lene coffeehouses located at 527 S Oakland Ave (now closed) and 901 N Nagle Ave (closed). Cadillac, Michigan is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 58,197 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is the largest city east of Chicago. Cadillac contains two colleges which are Wayne State University and Macomb Community College. The first settlement in what is now Cadillac was made by fur traders in the mid-1700s. In 1807, land west of present-day Cadillac was sold to David Wilkinson for $2,500. He founded Detroit on the site of an Indian trading post he had discovered near today's Royal Oak Road and Woodward Avenue. In 1811, General Lyon bought out Wilkinson's share in Detroit for $4,000 and established Lafayette Township on lands that later became Cadillac. In 1815, John Dutton built a home here called "Dutton's Grove". The town started as a small village with about 30 residents and grew rapidly when it became a military post during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). The post was abandoned in 1847 but resumed operations under Ulysses S. Grant after his victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Heights. Cadillac proper began to form around 1840 when William Woodward erected a house on what is now Main Street/Cadillac Boulevard (now US-10) just east of where it crosses into Livingston County from Wayne County. Woodward worked as an auctioneer and general storekeeper before purchasing 640 acres (260 hectares) southeast of present-day Cadillac from James Pendergast in 1850 for $8 per acre ($160 per kilometer). This land would become one of Michigan's most valuable squares; it comprised 5 square miles (12 square kilometers), or almost all that exists today within borders laid out by Pendergast himself more than 150 years ago! In 1861 Isabella Farnsworth married Frederick Augustus Worthy II – grandson of Augustus Henry Worthy – who had been born at nearby Arlington Lodge on December 11th 1800 according to public records kept by Washtenaw Township trustees then only six months old! At this point property lines were becoming artificial due to changes brought about by railroad construction across rural counties such as Wayne and Oakland Counties - something that would definitely come into play with increased travel times between large cities like Detroit and smaller towns like Arlington Lodge during this time period! On October 12th 1868 Arlington Lodge was destroyed by fire along with much else within the township including residential buildings south of Ottawa Street between Present day Whitehall Road/Detroit Drive & Park Avenue North; however notables within our community such as Judge Jeremiah Halsey were not immediately impacted because they resided elsewhere within Washtenaw Township limits! From this event forward events occurring within our township boundaries occurred primarily through purchases or donation directly from individual landowners rather than via government enactment!! There continues to be significant debate surrounding exactly when 'Cadillac' actually reached its current size - some claiming up until 1870 while others claim 1860 or even earlier!!! There are discrepancies stemming from various source materials available online dating back to those days!!! However whatever happened prior to 1870 remains largely unknown - one thing we DO know though...whatever happened changed everything!!!!
