Clawson is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clawson is located on the western bank of the river Muskegon. The community was founded in 1836 by Levi Clawson and his brother Amos Clawson as a farmstead on land that they had purchased from the U.S. government for $2 per acre. The brothers soon developed a mill and store in town, which became one of the leading businesses in the area. In 1851, Clawson's first school opened to serve local children; it quickly became an important stop for students travelling between Grand Rapids and Lansing Township. In 1860, both townships were merged into Muskegon County; Clawson remained separate until incorporation as a village in 1907. During World War II, Clawson was home to more than 2,000 American troops who were deployed to duty within Muskegon County; most notably during Operation Dragoon which saw many German soldiers killed or captured while retreating across the river Muskegon after being driven out of their homes by American forces at Battle Creek Ridge on July 25th 1944 In 1952, Clawson's main shopping center – known then as "The Roundabout" – opened with its own post office and several small stores that served residents of neighboring villages including Great Lakes Village (now Gratiot), White Cloud and Eastpointe Plaza before becoming one large shopping mall with over 200 shops when it opened its doors to shoppers from all overmuskegoncounty in 1986 Since then there have been periodic updates to The Roundabout - most recently an addition of two restaurants/cafes/bars along with additional space for retail tenants such as Home Depot and Sears- haulers now bring perishables directly below ground level so customers can view them without having to go through long lines
