The area that now makes up Coldwater was settled by Swedish farmers in 1824, and became a stop on stagecoach routes connecting Chicago with other parts of the United States. In 1847, a group of investors led by Isaac Hicks purchased land east of town and started to build what would become Coldwater Harbor. The town's first post office opened in 1853. In 1870, it incorporated as a village under the name "Coldwater". In response to increased shipping traffic from Detroit and Lake Superior, Coldwater began to develop its harbor into one of the most important commercial points on Michigan's west coast. By 1890, it had become one of the largest towns in Michigan with over 100 businesses and 1,000 residents. In 1899, Coldwater controversially annexed another small community called Kelleysville which housed Japanese Americans during World War II; this annexation was later overturned by an appeals court decision because Kelleysville was not within Coldwater's municipal boundaries at the time it became annexed

Coldwater is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the east bank of the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Huron and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The population was 21,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo–Portage County metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in what is now Coldwater was George Catlin, who arrived in 1795 from Baltimore with his family. Catlin built a log cabin on an island in the strait and named it "Catlin's Island". He also founded the town of Coldwater on land he purchased from tribal leader Chippewa Chief Ojibwe for $200 (). In 1824, John Davenport bought Catlin's Island and laid out a new town called Davenport on it to serve as a commercial center for northwestern Michigan. The first post office was established in 1825; it continued to be called "Catlin's Island" until 1881 when it became "Davenport." In 1827, General Anthony Wayne evacuated Detroit during the American Civil War and moved his army across Lake Huron to Fort Mackinac where he built Camp Mackinac (). In 1829, Thunder Bay merchant Jacob Riis founded a wagon trade route through Battle Creek Falls along what is now I-94 between Coldwater and Grand Rapids. When this route was superseded by railroad construction near Greenville in 1840, Riis began calling his route "the old country road". Coldwater developed slowly until World War II when its population exploded due to wartime needs such as shipbuilding and munitions production at nearby Shipston-On-Hull Naval Base (). After World War II ended, Coldwater experienced steady decline until its heyday as an agricultural center during the late 20th century drew attention away from its downtown core. However, economic revival has returned recently with development of new housing projects around Cooltown Square (), helped by increased visitation by tourists seeking attractions close by (such as I-94).
In 1817, the town of Coldwater was organized by a group of settlers. The town was named for the river Coldwater which flows through it. The first post office in Coldwater was established in 1819. In 1903, the village of Coldwater merged with thetown of Coldwater to form the City of Coldwater.
