The Detroit Naval Shipyard built more warships than any other naval shipyard in the world. The yards produced ships for both the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy, as well as a few for countries such as Chile and Peru. Ships from the Fleet Admiral Perry yard were also used in World War II to help protect Allied shipping lanes in the Mediterranean Sea. The Kit was later donated to Goldwater Memorial Museum in Phoenix, Arizona by Nimitz' widow and daughter before being moved to Detroit on October 20th, 1992 where it currently resides.
