Eastpointe, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 44,521 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Oakland County by population. Eastpointe is also home to McLaren Performance Engineering and several other high-tech companies. The first residents of what is now Eastpointe were Europeans who founded a fur trading post on the Rouge River in 1795. In 1814, they named their new settlement after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate east of Detroit. The post office was established in 1816, and located on the site where present-day Eastern Market stands today. In 1837, John Davenport donated land to build a military academy at Eastpointe for use by American Indians dating back to when Detroit was still part of Indian Territory under United States jurisdiction. That same year, construction began on what would become Woodward Avenue - one of America's most important commercial streets - which runs through downtown Eastpointe today. The village was incorporated as a town on April 16, 1847; its name comes from "east point" because it stood along northeastern shoreline of Lake Erie then known as Point Pelee (now Cleveland). During World War II (1939-1945), many factories operated within or near Eastpointe including Ford Motor Company's Hamtramck plant; Alcoa's Elkhart Assembly Plant; and Chrysler Corporation's Toledo Division Headquarters Building which became known as "The White House". On June 15th 1945 Chrysler Corporation announced plans to close its Toledo Division Headquarters Building effective September 1st 1945 due to wartime production restrictions placed upon them by the government controlled National Road Administration (NRA). This event marked the end of an era for Chrysler Corporation as their main manufacturing base in Ohio with operations moving more towards Flint, MI beginning immediately afterwards until their final closure in 1991.. Today much of what used to be production at that time has moved offshore or been replaced by higher tech products like McLaren Performance Engineering or Fordson Automotive Research Center however there are still some remaining Factory buildings such as Alcoa aluminum smelters/gases facility which date back to 1924 and are currently being renovated into an open air museum called "Aluminum Works".
Eastpointe was a town in Detroit, Michigan. It was first settled in 1836 and grew to include the present day neighborhoods of Eastpointe Park, Midtown Detroit, Highland Park, and Southfield. The town was annexed by Detroit in 1894.
