The history of roasted coffee in Escanaba, Michigan begins with the founding of the first coffee house in the city by George G. Cook in 1877. The first grocery store, which also served as the first café, was located on Wabash Avenue and was opened by John Pemberton. In 1898, Escanaba became a town and two years later, the first post office was established in town. The name of the first cafe changed to The Coffee House at one point but it is unknown if it was still open at that time or closed down. In 1905, Mr. Cook founded J&J CoffeeCompany and began producing roasted coffee for local businesses and consumers alike. He continued to operate his business until his death in 1945. From then on, J&J CoffeeCompany passed through several ownership changes before finally being sold to Harry Bourse from Detroit in 1972. At this point, Harry Bourse decided to change the company name to National Coffee Company Incorporated (NBC). NBC continues production of roasted coffee products today and has been a major player in Escanaba's commercial landscape for over 100 years! Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Escanaba County. As of 2010, the population was 34,966. The city is located on the lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Lansing and 50 miles (81 km) north of Detroit. The name "Escanaba" means "good place to farm." The first Europeans to visit Escanaba were French traders in 1698 who landed on the peninsula with three ships commanded by Jean Nicolet. They named it Pointe-à-Pitre after one of their points of land in Newfoundland where they had sailed before leaving for France laden with goods and animals. From 1701 to 1706, Indian traders from Michilimackinac passed through Escanaba on their way to Mackinac Island near Detroit; during this time, they called the area Pigeon River because there were so many pigeons living around Pointe-à-Pitre at that time. After 1706, when British traders began arriving in greater numbers, Escanaba became known as Fort George or Forks Landing due to its strategic location at an forks in a river which led into Lake Huron from two directions: downriver to Cadillac and then upriver to Ottawa Township and then along Ottawa River into what is now Grand Rapids County. In 1816, Alexander Macdonald explored northern Michigan as part of his exploratory survey for Canada under Governor John Graves Simcoe and he noted that "Escanaba [was] founded by French fur traders..." In 1824–25 permission was granted from Great Lakes Commandant Major General Isaac Brock for a steamboat service between Detroit and Sault Ste Marie carrying passengers and cargo over parts of both lakes but only six boats ever operated; these boats transported supplies for troops fighting against Native Americans involved in the War Of 1812 including Colonel John Bingham's 1st battalion militia detachment which fought at Battle Of Two Rivers some 40 miles north west near present day Mason City Iowa July 14th1824 On November 2nd 1830 while visiting Pontiac he met Nicholas LaFontaine who told him about an opening up your country not much further than you are now called Mackinac Territory adjoining upon it on both sides Rock Creek flowing thence northeastwardly...He told me also that there were other openings lying open within very few days journey by horseback or wagons so I started immediately upon his information making all haste possible...I found out subsequently that this opened territory was properly purchased by United States government under act August 22d 1827 as shown by deed recorded February 20th 1830...It lay within current limits then occupied by Upper Peninsula Indians name’d Echota bandools meaning “the place where we used to fish” In 1840 Daniel Darnell built a small log cabin hereabouts on what is now Main Street (). Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Escanaba County. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing–Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to what is now Michigan were French traders in 1642, who named it "Island de la Résistance". They located their trading post on an island in Lake Huron about 12 miles from present-day Escanaba. In 1797, when Detroit was founded as a trading post on the southern side of Mackinac Island by French fur traders, Escanaba became its capital. It served as the capital until 1805 when Mackinac Island was added to Detroit Territory. In 1837, General John Custer led his 6th Cavalry Regiment against Native Americans at Battle of Inkster Creek near modern day Toledo, Ohio; this event is widely known as Custer's Last Stand and has been honored with a number of memorials and museums across North America. At that time, all Native American nations living within rifle range of white settlers were forced onto reservations or into poverty and violence (the Trail of Tears). As a result of this戦争-inspired conflict and following US military occupation during Reconstruction period (1863-1877), many people moved away from what is now Escanaba due to fear for their safety; however, some remain here today as retirees or local business owners among others who are still connected to community life through various programs such as founding organizations or working together for causes such as arts and culture development or public education/health initiatives
The town of Escanaba was founded in 1827 by John Augustus Fenton, a fur trader. The first settler in the area was Jacob Heiman, who built a cabin on the banks of the White River. By 1830, there were over twenty-five people living in Escanaba. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s as settlers arrived from Michigan and other states to take advantage of the new land. At its peak, Escanaba had over one hundred residents and four businesses. In 1847, Captain George Stephenson founded the city of Detroit with help from Fenton. The townsfolk of Escanaba quickly abandoned their small community forDetroit; however, some remain today as chroniclers and historians of the town’s history.
