The Fenton, Michigan Army Garrison was established in 1811. The unit was the first military detachment in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It remained an infantry regiment until 1862, when it became a cavalry unit. The garrison garrisoned at Fort Gratiot until 1874, when it moved to Ford City and later to Battle Creek. The unit was disbanded in 1898.

It was not until 221 BC when Rome gave their first military campaign outside Italy, known as the Punic Wars, with a force of 25,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry. This marks the beginning of a long military tradition between Rome and Greece. Rome's armed forces would go on to play a significant role in both World Wars I and II. In 1914, they contributed 8% of the world's total population and made up 11% of all combat troops; however by 1945 they had decreased to 1%. Despite this diminution in numbers over time, through donations by princes and governments throughout Europe they have continued to support armies around the world at all levels -small units (the Swiss Guard), peacekeeping missions (e.g., Kosovo) or more significant operations such as Operation Neptune's Spear (1956-1957), which led to Indo-China War.
The U.S. Army's gift history goes back to the early days of the Republic, when it was a small garrison force fighting for independence from Great Britain. In 1802, the Army was increased to its present size and given its first modern arms, including cannons and rifles. The following year, theArmy participated in its first battle against British forces in what is now known as Battle of Saratoga. In 1812, during the War of 1812, theArmy fought in both the North American and European theaters of war. In 1814-1815, during President James K Polk's administration,theArmy fought in Mexico City under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of Operation Justicia. After Mexican Independence was achieved in 1850,theU.S.Army transferred all remaining military assets to Mexico City and decommissioned them there on July 1st, 1850.
Fenton, Michigan is a small town in the southern tip of the state of Michigan. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Harrisonville metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Fenton Township was Jean Baptiste Le Moyne in 1796 when he and his party of three landed on Ann Arbor Peninsula. In 1807, George Washington's surveyor, James Kuntz, surveyed what is now Fenton Township and named it for General John Fenton who had died two years earlier while fighting with the British army in Canada. In 1814, land grants were given to seven families which included Isaac Newton Hull and his son John Hull (the father of Rear Admiral Thomas Hulbert Hull). In 1830, Isaac Newton Hull sold 40 acres of land near present-day North Main Street to Moses Morse for $1 per acre. Moses Morse built a gristmill on this site in 1830 which became known as the Morse Mill. The mill continued operations until 1916 when it was closed due to bankruptcy. The mill was purchased by A & M Feeds in 1919 and operated until 1986 when it went out of business also. In 1946, a group led by local farmer Clarence Dutton bought the mill property from A & M Feeds for $500 and restored it as a bed and breakfast inn called The Old Mill Inn which still operates today under that name. The Old Mill Inn has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1992. Fenton Township formed from part of Calhoun County on November 3rd 1834 following an election where all residents voted to join together withington township located just north east (now Stonington) as one village forming what would become known as "Fenton". On July 1st 1835 Charles Sibley erected a sawmill on Commercial River Dam giving rise to what is now downtown Fenton which began operation January 10th 1840 with 30 employees including 19 men power tools making lumber for homespun cloth fashions common at that time; carpentry; glassblowing; printing presses etc... By 1850 there were 100 employees working at Sibley's Sawmill including 46 men power tools making lumber for homespun cloth fashions common at that time; carpentry; glassblowing; printing presses etc... This sawmill failed but gave rise to another soon afterwards called Sibley Bros Machine Shop being founded by cousin Charles Sibley Jr.(aka Chas) Nov 25th 1850 with 11 employees making parts for engines used in railways Railroad locomotives cars steamboats etc... ThisMachineShop failed too but gave rise eventually to Stevens Manufacturing Company located just south side main street (now Broadway) during late 1800’s early 1900’s becoming America’s largest manufacture of wooden machines ever established creating jobs right here in town
Fenton was founded in 1836 by John Fenton and his wife, Rachel. The town was named after John's older brother, Barton Fenton. In 1874, the village of Fenton was incorporated as a separate municipality. Finally, in 1922, the township of Fenton was formed from portions of the village and township.
