The Ferndale Coast Guard Station was founded in 1907 as the first coast guard station on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The present station is located on the east side of town, between Center and South streets. The original building was erected on a grant from the State of Michigan and it served as a barracks for the local volunteer fire department. In 1912, the Coast Guard moved to its present location and began operating from what is now known as Building A. In 1951, Building B was purchased by the Ferndale Police Department which used it as their precinct headquarters until 1984 when they moved to Building C. In 1992, Building A was sold to the Town of Ferndale who continue to use it as their municipal office today. Building A has been home to many different organizations over the years including: The Detroit Red Wings (1912-present), The Ferndale YMCA (1927-present), The County Fairgrounds Athletic Association (1945-1967), The Lions Club (1968-1991), and most recently, Marquette University's hockey team (1998-present). The building has been out of commission for a number of years due to its age but has been rehabilitated and is currently being used as an event hall by both the town and university.
