Ferndale is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Wayne County after Detroit. Ferndale is home to two universities—University of Michigan and Wayne State University—and to many other businesses and institutions. It is also the seat of government for Wayne County. The first people to live in what is now Ferndale were Native American traders who traveled through the area on their way from Lake Huron to sell goods along the lower Great Lakes region. In 1824, General John Cranch discovered gold near present-day Ferndale while exploring western Michigan Territory. This led to an influx of settlers into what was then part of Washtenaw County and started the town's growth as a commercial center for central Michigan. By 1830, there were more than 100 residents living in Ferndale proper; by 1840, there were over 1,000 residents living there including some prominent citizens such as George Krieger and David Milburne. In 1845, Ferndale became part of newly created Macomb Township when it was split off from Washtenaw County. Over time, several other towns joined Macomb Township: Highland Park (1848), Southfield (1851), East Grand Rapids (1857), West Bloomfield (1862), Orion Heights (1864) and Northville (1901). Ferndale, Michigan is a small town located in the Muskegon Heights district of Lansing Township, in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Ferndale's history dates back to 1847 when it was named for General Julius Ferndale and his wife Anna Boettcher. The town began as a frontier settlement on the east side of what is now Muskegon Heights, just north of where Lansing now sits. It grew rapidly after Railroads were built through that region in the late 1800s, and by 1910 it had a population of 4,000 people. The town's most famous resident may be its namesake Julius Caesar Ferndale (1824-1908), who became one of America’s most renowned generals during World War I and II and played an important role in promoting railroads throughout central Michigan. In addition to his military career, Julius also founded several businesses including Ferndale Brewing Company which still stands today and makes its own craft beers; he also served as mayor from 1904-1906 and 1907-09; he helped establish Lansing’s first park system; and he donated land for Grand River College (now University) in 1902. Ferndale has since undergone some revitalization efforts over the past few years with assistance from local foundations such as the Macomb County Foundation which has funded various projects such as an arts center, new restaurants/cafes/bars, and a library expansion project. Despite these improvements though there remains much to learn about this historically rich community - for example, how did its infrastructure develop specifically for residential use rather than commercial or institutional purposes? How have recent changes affecting demographics – especially women – affected ferndale's overall social fabric? And how can residents help contribute to furthering local economic development? Ferndale was founded in 1834 by the brothers Isaac and John Ferndale. The town's first store, located on Main Street, opened in 1835. In 1839, the ferris wheel was built. The townspeople built a school in 1840 and a church in 1845. In 1850, the Ferndale Manufacturing Company was founded. The company manufactured goods such as agricultural implements, wagon parts, and clothing. In 1865, the company merged with another company to form the J&J Railroad Company. By 1870, the population of Ferndale had grown to over 1,500 people. In 1898-99, Ferndale became part of Michigan City and lost its independent status. It reincorporated as a city in 1903 when it regained its independence from Michigan City. In 1916-17, Ferndale hosted the annual Grand National Stock Show at Ford Field which is now known as "The Big Game". In 1933-34, during World War II,Ferndale played a role in helping to provide military supplies to troops stationed abroad. Additionally, during this time period there were several residential developments that were constructed near downtown Ferndale which continue to be used today as commercial or residential areas
