The Royal Navy grew rapidly through the eighteenth century and by 1800 it had over eighty warships and numerous shore batteries. In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded England, leading to the War of 1812. The Royal Navy played a very important role in this conflict, with more than six thousand sailors dying during the conflict. In 1814, Napoleon was defeated and lost control of Europe. TheRoyal Navy slowly diminished after this victory, but remained an important part of British society until World War II when it ceased to exist completely. Today, there are several navies operating within the world’s borders and they continue to play an important role in both international relations and defense. Ferndale is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 29,762 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit. Ferndale is the county seat of Wayne County. The first permanent settler in what would become Ferndale was John Pritchard, who arrived on July 8, 1834. He and his family camped along the banks of the Sanilac River for two weeks before moving north to a site on land that would become today's downtown area. In 1835, Pritchard and three other settlers founded the town of Ferndale on land donated by George Stephenson. The townspeople built their first schoolhouse in 1836 and Father Matthias Kolbe began preaching at an old log church dedicated to St. John Baptist in 1840. In 1851, a group of men from Flint organized what would become the Michigan Central Railroad (MCR). The MCR moved its operations into Ferndale when it opened up new territory through Wayne County in1852. In 1853, construction began on what would be known as "the Great Northern" Train Station which served as a vital link between Detroit and Chicago during the early days of railroads across America—a time when ferries transported goods over Lake Erie maritime crossings between those cities and Buffalo or Rochester New York City. In 1860s local businessman Augustus Kelley purchased much of downtown Ferndale from aging citizens for $10 per acre (1/2 hectare) - one-third of what it cost to build just five years earlier! By 1870s most businesses had closed down due to competition from larger towns such as Trenton or even Ann Arbor; however some small remaining businesses continued until around 1930 when they were supplanted by large manufacturing plants within miles of each other across central Michigan! Trucks delivered foodstuffs like flour, bacon and cheese directly to market here rather than going through Cleveland or Toledo! This once important transportation artery has been replaced by Interstate 75 today! During prohibition era many residents turned their backs on alcohol completely but this didn't stop truckloads of beer rolling into town every day from heading westward! Today's downtown district contains nearly 100 buildings dating from pre-industrial times up through World War II; many are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places including: Pioneer Memorial Hall (1911), Masonic Temple (1892), Social Security Building (1940), Bank building (1920), First American Bank building (1921), Electrician's Guild hall(1923) & more... Today there are also several restaurants and stores open 24/7 serving up fresh produce 365 days a year plus numerous convenience stores with gasoline pumps located throughout... Downtown Ferndale is home to several museums including: Midland Museum District Museum which features displays about midwestern culture & history; Woodward Historical Park containing exhibits about General Motors (the company that built Cadillac); Ford Motor Company museum featuring artifacts about Dearborn Heights;& more... One recent development underway is an apartment complex called Northtown Place which overlooks downtown center & offers multiple floors with all sorts of amenities like parks & pools
