Grand Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Upper Peninsula of the Great Lakes region. The population was 27,645 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth-largest city in Michigan and its second-largest city after Detroit. Grand Haven is also one of 12 cities in Michigan with a population over 100,000. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Grand Haven in 1795 as part of an effort to find land for British colonists who were already living in what is now Ontario and Quebec. The settlement was called "Nixton" after General James Nixon, governor of India during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In 1814, Grand Haven became part of Huron County and was renamed "Haven". In 1847, construction began on the first courthouse in Michigan Territory; it was completed by 1850 and served as the seat for much of that territory's government until 1861 when Lansing took over that role from Huron County commissioners. In 1863, Grand Haven became part of Wayne County when it was created from parts of Shiawassee and Muskegon Counties. On July 1, 1897 – just two months after General Motors announced plans to build a new plant at Dearborn – GM merged with Flint/Lansing Motors Company to form GMC Motor Co., which would become one of America's largest commercial automakers under their then CEO Edward Lanchester (1902-1977). On November 10th 1984 through a merger with Seagrams Inc., GMC acquired Pontiac Automotive Division including its manufacturing plants located at Wixom and Orion Township east side hometowns near Detroit where Pontiac divisions assets included such brands as Buick (1912), Cadillac (1915), Regal (1920), Thunderbird (1925).. These assets were combined into GMC's Cadillac division which would be headquartered here until 1999 when they moved to suburban Warren Park Plaza concurrently with their former Buick division headquarters moving from downtown Detroit’s Exchange Place neighborhood

Grand Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and its second-largest city within Wayne County after Detroit. It is also one of four cities in Michigan that are both part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Grand Haven were Native Americans who arrived from Illinois about 1800. They built log huts on a Peninsula extending into Kawkawa Lake about 1810 and began trading with other tribes nearby for goods brought overland by Indian traders traveling southward from Canada. In 1818, English fur trader David Thompson discovered what is now Grand Haven and wrote about it in his journal: "grand view from above as if upon a clear sky." This led to increased trade with Indians and exploration by Europeans, who named the peninsula "Haven" after George Haven, an early settler thereabouts. In 1821, General Anthony Wayne founded Detroit as an independent settlement onDetroit River near present day Royal Oak, northeast of present day Grand Rapids; he named it in honor of John Marshall (1745-1826), Secretary of War under James Kelling (1795-1853) and one of the founders of Upper Canada. The original town plat included land east of current day downtown that was later annexed to Detroit; today's eastern edge belonged to Oakland Township before being annexed to Dearborn Heights in 2006 following a referendum vote by residents thereon. On December 15, 1827, construction began on Woodward Avenue which would become metropolitan Detroit's main north/south artery The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Grand Haven between September 1824 and October 1830 when William Hovey set up business as a furrier along what is now First Street North (now Muskegon Road). Heading southwest from Toronto via Ionia Bayou they encountered shortgrass prairies covering most or allof their trip except for several miles along their way where standsOf hardwood forest persistence until after reaching Mobile Harbor . From this point onward travel through open country became much more difficult due to thick cover offered only by cedar trees although some pioneer settlements had been established near fresh water bodies such as Saginaw Bayou just northwest of present day Holland Park Trail leading thenceredoctors future home such as Fort Gratiot was located near Cadillac Creek southeast corner then Port Huron northwest corner today's Midland Ave SE corner

The city's growth slowed during World War II as a result of military recruiting drives to support American forces in Europe; but after the war began, Grand Haven resumed its rapid growth and became one of Michigan's major industrial cities by the late 1960s. The City Council adopted a resolution recognizing November 11th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 1984.
