Grand Haven, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Grand Rapids County. The population was 762 at the 2010 census. Grand Haven is located on the lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordered by Erie County to the north and east, Washtenaw County to the south, and Lapeer County to the west. The port town has been a commercial center for maritime trade since 1795 and is currently known for its manufacturing sector as well as its role in University of Michigan research initiatives. The history of Grand Haven begins with settlers who arrived in 1795 from Ohio via Hull and Eastpointe. As early as 1812, there were white traders living in what is now downtown Grand Haven; these included John Bagley and his brother Isaac Bagley Sr., both partners in the store that would later become The Hermitage Bookstore & Coffee House. In 1814, General Allen's Expedition against Native Americans destroyed much of central Upper Peninsula village Green Bay; most of present-day Grand Haven was not burned but did suffer damage including loss of buildings and homes dating back to before European contact. In 1830, Samuel Hubbard bought land near what is now downtown Grand Haven from Peter Kieft for $1 per acre (though it had only been surveyed into township form). Hubbard began developing his land into a small town with three streets leading out from his house; this became known as Hubbardville after him. By 1840,Hubbardville had developed into an important commercial center due to its location on Lake Superior between White Marsh to the north and Buffalo Bayou to the south-west; it also served as an unofficial terminus for steamboats docking at nearby White Marsh because that area was then considered part of Hamburg Township (later Holland Township) until it was annexed by Grand Rapids in 1850).
