In 1885, Grand Haven was the site of a small military deployment when Michigan troops were called to help protect the city from an invasion by Texas. The town’s citizens had gathered supplies and makeshift fortifications in anticipation of the war, and as soon as they heard about the mobilization they began to pack up their belongings and head south. Over time, these small-scale deployments became more common, with different units rotating through town on occasion. In 1914, when World War I started, Grand Haven’s residents again mobilized to help out their community. This time, however, the city wasn’t just sitting around waiting for the call; they built several large infrastructure projects in preparation for war. In 1915-16 there were also two major deployments; one was during World War I when local volunteers served in artillery batteries stationed in Ontario County, and another took place during World War II when soldiers from Grand Haven ordered munitions dropped on Hiroshima. Today, it is still an interesting coincidence that both wars took place within a few miles of each other in this large city. Throughout its history, Grand Haven has been known for its military installations – both old and new. For example, the former US Army Ammunition Plant is now home to US Marines (the first time Marine Corps personnel have ever lived in town). Additionally, Fort Holland State Park is home to various types of arms storage and training areas used by NATO member countries as well as special forces operations teams conducting missions beyond our planet Earth. Each year some new installation or encampment is erected on land that once constituted part of our larger military presence; such as Camp Haggerty which overlooks downtownGrand Haven and hosts army live fire exercises every summer (a tradition dating back to 1881). In 1892, the Grand Haven Township Committee voted to deploy a military detachment in support of the Michigan National Guard. The detachment was composed of three companies of riflemen and one company of artillery. The brigade was quartered at the Soldiers' Home on State Street in town.

During much of its history as a small outpost on Lake Huron just east of present-day Midland City, little more than wooden buildings stood where present-day downtownGrand Haven resides today: only five buildings remain from when Grand Rapids first opened up in 1824 as one large village with several blocks surrounding it on all sides; four others have since been demolished or replaced by highrise commercial structures indistinguishable from their original counterparts save for some minor alterations (e.g., white picket fences around building entrances). The area that now includes Grand Haven was first settled by Native Americans, who called it Kalamazoo. The first European settlers were traders and missionaries from Sweden, who founded what is now Grand Rapids in 1795. In 1812, after India's independence from British rule, Grand Haven became part of United States as part of Washtenaw County. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its position on one of four white-controlled shipyards on Michigan's Upper Peninsula; these shipyards produced vessels such as clippers used by American merchants around the world. In 1868, when Michigan became an all-black Territorial Territory following the Civil War, Grand Haven was integration into African American society as a result of Jim Crow laws passed at that time in Georgia and other Southern states. During World War II, Grand Haven played an important role in producing munitions for America's war effort; many Allied bombers made their landing strips here while refueling before flying back to England or North Africa.
