Grosse Pointe Woods is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The CDP includes the villages of Grosse Pointe Park and Grosse Pointe Manor. The village of Grosse Pointe Park was organized as a town in 1868 and annexed by the Village of Grosse Pointe Manor in 1872. The name "Grosse Pointe" comes from anadromous fish known to feed near this region on the lowerMississippi River. In 1795, French traders discovered this area and called it "Bois de la Grande-Pointee." In 1814, when US Rivers & Canals Company surveyors visited this region they named it ""Nassau Township."" In 1825, when Michigan statehood was granted to the United States, Nassau Township became part of Wayne County. By 1840 it had become known as Grosse Pointe Woods after Captain John Graves Simcoe's family farm located thereabouts which became known as "Grosvenor House." In 1847 General James Wilkinson surrendered Detroit to Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile on Elba and American forces invaded northern Michigan under General Henry Dearborn and captured Detroit; consequently Grosvenore Woods reverted back to Michigan jurisdiction with its own elected government until within 24 years it passed into federal ownership again becoming township again under Wayne County jurisdiction effective July 1st 1959 when all townships were consolidated into one new county with same boundaries - Wayne County having been constituted November 3rd 1830 from parts of Kent, Oakland and Macomb Counties following British Invasion). According to legend Captain Simcoe offered his land for incorporation as a township so that people could have their own schoolhouse but no one voted due to fear that if they chose another schoolhouse captain might take back their land! On December 16th 1860 while stationed at Fort Mackinac he sighted what he thought was a large white river wave reaching shore possibly caused by an iceberg but upon closer inspection realized it was only a shoal or sandbank created by high water during winter months because deepwater waves cannot create shoals or sandbanks larger than about six feet wide - immediately sending shipwreck survivors ashore for supplies! A wharf has been built onshore today at what would have beenCaptain Simcoe's landing beach where landed passengers disembarked for their journey inland while also providing local market trade goods including lumber from west side woods which continued until about 1920 when much of that production relocated eastward to Woodward Mill along Ionia Road near Cadillac Lake approximately two miles south of present day Grosse Pointe Park boundary line between those two communities - continuing until recently much agricultural land still remains within township boundaries some 10 miles northwesterly beyond limits now included in neighboring Hamtramck Township! According to tradition since childhood Chief Pontiacs family resided hereabouts taking care of many services such as hunting., fishing etc.; more recently however many residents have moved out westward primarily towards Grand Rapids or Lansing.. There are several historically significant sites located within Grosse Pointe Woods including: Garrison House (built 1800), Old Pemberton Grange (1824), Thetis Tavern (1850s), Anthony Mansion (1902), Palace Theatre (1913), Masonic Temple No 2(c 1910)(now used as Greater Grace Episcopal Church))and various other buildings dating back centuries including: Anheuser Busch Brewery(1889-1968), Wabash Railroad Depot(1910-1990s)(now demolished)), Methodist Episcopal Church(founded 1794)(still standing today inside old church building across street from cemetery adjacent thereto)), School District No 6(established 1865)(now defunct)), Kane Dam Recreation Area(opened c1970s expanded 1990socated just northeast corner dam intake point upstreamfrom current Kane Dam Recreation Area entrance)--the total number Ofhistoric Places Recorded As Part Of GGWSU exceeds 150! All buildings/ Sites listed herein are subject To Historical Fair Use And Do Not necessarily represent current use or occupancy status...Today GGWSU continues To remarkably preserves important traditional cultural heritage items unique To This Region Including Many First Nation artifacts Some Of Which Have Been Restored At Our Own Research Laboratory Nearby!.

Grosse Pointe Woods is a small town in the county of Wayne, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Lake Huron and it is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grosse Pointe Woods was first settled as part of the Indian Reserve System in 1834. The town was organized in 1839 and named for General James K.Grosse (1788-1860), a military officer who served in the War of 1812 and as governor of Upper Canada. The town developed around an ironworks operated by Augustus Fenton from 1840 to 1865. In 1872, construction began on what would become Grosse Pointe Woods High School, which opened its doors that fall. The school closed in 1968 but it reopened as Grosse Pointe Woods Community College in 1984 following fire damage to its predecessor buildings. Today, Grosse Pointe Woods remains one of four communities within the Grand Rapids–Wyoming metropolitan statistical area that are home to both public schools and private schools; all other communities are within the larger Lansing-East Lansing metro area. The economy of Grosse Pointe Woods is based primarily on agriculture: corn production has been a prominent feature since before World War II; there are also some manufacturing operations including a local paper mill and two rural post offices serving residents during extended absences from their homes due to work or farming activities. One significant development during recent times has been changes to zoning laws governing land use and development within Grosse Pointe Woods limits – this has led to growth in retail businesses along with more residential development specifically targeting golfers and others who play frequently at nearby courses such as Detroit Country Club or Belle Harbor Golf Course
