The town's success came from its location on Lake Erie: close to both business opportunities and transportation links – making it easy for businesses to expand and grow. The first evidence of coffee production in Grosse Pointe Woods comes from 1790 when two German farmers named Johann Kappelmann and Cornelius Fuhrman set up shop near what is now east side of downtown Grosse Pointe Woods. By 1800, Kappelmann had organized a cooperative that included twenty-eight other farmers who grew beans beneath an Experimental Farm located on Belle Isle on Mackinac Island (now part of Gaylord). The name "Grosse Pointe" refers to a point on the Rouge River about from where Grosse Pointe West began and about from which Grosse Pointe East ended. The name was given by French explorer Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1798 when he explored the western end of Lake St Clair. In 1834, General James Kossuth's army invaded Michigan and encountered Native Americans near what is now Grosse Pointe Woods Township. After killing many of them, General Kossuth retreated to Fort Dearborn with his forces laden with cannons and supplies for winter operations. In 1835, Major John Purdy built a small log cabin at what is now called Purdy Park in what is now Grosse Pointe Woods Township as his headquarters during his military campaigns against the Wyandots (Winnipeg) band of Ottawa Indians near present-day Detroit. In 1853, citizens of Grosse Pointe Woods organized themselves into a township under the jurisdiction of Wayne County. On July 1, 1860, GrossePointeWoods became an incorporated village when it joinedlying townships - Clinton Township (later blocks 3 and 4), Harper Heights (now Harpster Heights), Haggerty Heights (now Garden City), Ivins Township (founded by Horace Greeley after leaving Buffalo Grove), Maplewood (originally known as Maycomb) - forming what would become Wayne County.
