Grosse Pointe Woods is a city in the Michigan general area, and is part of the Flint Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 36,898 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Grand River east of Flint and west of Lansing. The community dates back to 1836 when Grosse Pointe Manor was founded by Captain John Neely. The name "Grosse Pointe" comes from a point on the Grand River about two miles (3 kilometers) north of present-day Grosse Pointe Woods. In 1837, Captain Neely's family sold land in what is now Grosse Pointe Woods to Major General Lewis Cass for $5,000. Cass named his new settlement after his friend and mentor General James Kautz who had served with him during the Mexican–American War and also helped build Detroit. In 1839, Captain Neely's son-in-law, Isaiah Stiles purchased 50 acres (20 hectares) in what is now Grosse Pointe Woods from Colonel David Birney for $10 per acre ($2 per hectare). Stiles built a tavern there called "The Lion", which became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Detroit and other points in Southwest Michigan. In 1840, he donated another 50 acres (20 hectares) to make way for a public school system that would serve his farmland as well as developing adjacent areas such as Northville and West Bloomfield Township (now Plymouth Township). In 1841, Russian immigrant Mikhail Ignatiev bought 800 acres (400 hectares) northeast of present-day Grosse Pointe Woods from Augustus Saint John Macomb for $25 per acre ($10 per hectare).Ignatiev continued farming this property until his death in 1888.
