The Harper Woods community is located in the eastern part of Lansing County and is bordered by the cities of Holland and Southfield on the north, Clinton Township on the east, and Dexter on the south. The population was 3,821 as of the 2010 census. The original town site was a location near what is now Harper Woods High School. It was moved to its current location in 1886 when a railroad line was built through that area. The name Harper Woods came from a settler who named his farm after his grandson, John Harper. As Michigan grew economically during the late 19th century, many families moved toMichigan from Illinois and other parts of Ohio and Indiana. Many people in Harper Woods were farmers or merchants who invested their money in timberlands, mines, and other businesses. In 1906, Harper Woods became an incorporated village with a government headed by an elected board of trustees. During World War II many American soldiers were stationed at nearby Macomb Arsenal; as result, there was an influx of civilian workers into the village during that time period. This increased demand for housing led to some construction projects being undertaken such as re-building two churches which were destroyed in a fire in 1955. In 1984, Harper Woods received cityhood status from Lansing County despite strong opposition from some residents because they felt it would not provide enough services such as water or trash collection within their community boundaries. Today most citizens are supportive of cityhood because it gives them more control over local affairs than they would have if they lived within Lansing County's borders alone.

The town's name has been changed many times, but it remains primarily known as Harper Woods. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn and other grains for sale in Harper Woods market. By 1881, the town had become an important hub for the lumber industry, with mills manufacturing everything from logs to flooring. The mill towns around Harper Woods quickly became one of the most vibrant communities on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 1914, when Prohibition made liquor illegal in America, many of the loggers and farmers who had supported prohibition fled to Canada or Mexico. But the community never lost its spirit: in 1933, when prohibition was repealed, Harper Woods voted to become one of the first American towns to legalize marijuana. Today, Harper Woods is a thriving community full of history and culture. Its diverse attractions include several theaters and museums; a wide range of shops and restaurants; some 300 acres (120 hectares) of parksland; and more than 100 homes dating back to before 1800.

The town continued to grow until it merged with nearby Palmer Township in 1907.
